2023: .895 OPS vs. LHP, .777 OPS vs. RHP
2022: .552 OPS vs. LHP, .889 OPS vs. RHP
That's just weird as heck!

What I was saying this past offseason is the O's need a legit DH to lessen Adley's ABs. That wasn't because he's not a good hitter. It's that he wore down last year, and he's got one of the longest swings you're ever going to see.
Get him some rest. He's elite. Don't run him into the ground.

O'Hearn's been a good DH this year - maybe you mean a DH who can hit LHP?

Enough. Use your brains for once to understand the toll catching takes on someone by this time of year. There is a reason Cs dont produce offensively.
I think / hope everyone gets that.
But his value is largely tied to him being a catcher.
If this is the best he's going to be offensively, than that has to factor into what you want to do extension wise.
If he has to spend 50+ games a year at DH, that impacts the roster.
I think an extension is going to happen with the new ownership.
If the O's end up being a middle of the pack spending team, I'm cool with an extension.... even factoring in the above, given his perceived leadership, one of the faces of the franchise, etc. (plus most importantly his overall ability.)
The walk rate is curious.
The pop time isn't great.
The arm strength is strong, but the accuracy is meh.
Blocking is excellent.
His relationships with his pitchers is excellent.
He's a very good / near excellent player overall.
And yet, I at-least feel like he could be a bit more.
That's probably unfair, and that's on me.

I really don't care if they extend him. The only reason I would is because he's so well liked in the clubhouse and as a face of the franchise. From pure ability not as much. I get the toll of catching. I caught fast pitch for many years and its hard work. But his hitting is valued because he's a catcher. If he has to DH to get enough bat then his value drops IMO.

Hes a 5 WAR player. He is above avg as a hitter across the league regardless of position. Some nitpicking is certainly fair but the bellyaching goes far beyond nitpicking. For one, people focus on offense more than defense. Two, as I said, C is just a differet beast when it comes to offensive production. Johnny Bench finished his career as with a 126 OPS+. Fisk 117. Mauer 124. Adley is at 121

Sorry I didn't see this (late reply).
O'Hearn hits RHP and that's it. He's not a good 1B, and he should never be in the OF. The guy to sign to play DH next year is Santander (or some combination of him and Kjerstad). Get Mayo a 1B mitt.

Bad years happen, even for stars.
Julio Rodriguez has a 670 OPS this year. Matt Olson has a 747 OPS. Carlos Correa was 711 last year.
I'd 100% push to get an extension done after this season. I've long thought it was hopeless because he was close enough to free agency to wait for his one big payday opportunity. Still expect that is the case. But maybe this rough stretch has opened his eyes to the comforts of guaranteed money. I'd look to capitalize on that and get him inked. Very little concern that it'd be a net negative long term.

Why would you extend him if you didn't want him to catch? At this point I would only extend him if the plan was to have him C less than 50% of the time.
Posted 29 August 2024 - 10:48 AM
Because it appears that catching is wearing on him and he hits much better as a DH this year...way better. I would hope that catching just half the time or a little less would improve his hitting and catching. Why would you extend him if you didn't want him to catch?
He's an average to good bat at 1B or DH. He's elite at C.
If you don't like him catching, then you don't wanna sign him. Pretty simple.
I do think he'll split a lot of time with Basallo, if Basallo's defense is good enough, and am very excited about that idea. But I expect Adley to be the primary. Maybe 100 starts to 60.
