I do hope that the O's have some kind of on-field ceremony planned this year for Smith and Baines, and that Mussina would be included in that if he gets in.

I would not be surprised if they do this in lieu of an OHOF induction this year. And yes, that would be a nice opportunity, were it to happen, to at least announce a statue.

Sort of off topic, but the father of the statue sculptor died the other day.  The dad is the guy who Ben Affleck played in Argo.

Ok, wow...I didn't know about much of this.

Geez, Steinbrenner is a bit of a douche.

Howie Spira was once a client of mine because of course he was.

I can't imagine a Mussina statue even when he makes the Hall.  When I hear the name Mussina, I just don't think Orioles legend like I do with the other 5.

Well, the others won rings. Mussina did not.

And the others are from previous generations, although there's overlap with Cal and Eddie.

People talk about recency bias, and sometimes with good reason, but I think the opposite tends to hold true with honoring athletes in this type of way, especially in baseball.

Not gonna argue bWAR is the best stat to look at for something like this, but it's a decent one.

Moose trails all of the others in career WAR as an Orioles except for Frank (who only played 6 years here).  He's comparable in WAR/year for all of the rest (except Frank, who amassed a crazy 36 WAR in his 6 years here), if you want to think of it in terms of individual greatness while an Orioles, but he obviously falls well short in terms of time spent in Baltimore compared to all the others so he loses ground in longevity.

I do think it's a good test case, as there is nobody else remotely close to Mussina.  If Mussina is in, and if Mussina gets a statue, there wouldn't be any sort of slippery slope concern.

Would they retire his number after like 18 people have worn it since?

Good point.  I think yes.  I think the retired numbers and statues should go hand-in-hand.

Orioles haven't had that scenario happen, but I imagine that other teams have retired a number for a player even after other players wore it in between.

I dunno. I'd have a hard time putting a statue out there for Moose. What it takes to be out there is unofficial. Service time, Frank has the least. World Series they all have, but a great Oriole player might not have a WS cause thats a team accomplishment. Like if Markakis was extended, played here for 20 years and chased down 3,000 hits but never won a WS, I'd put his statue out there.

Feel like there has to be something that sets you apart. Mussina isn't that. He was really good, HOF worthy, half his career some where else. No hardware, no individual achievements like a Cy Young. 5-time AS is cool. Gives him just one more than Matt Wieters though. Ugh.

I definitely see the argument against a statue for Mussina, but Wieters shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath. :D

Now the question is whether or not he's in as an Oriole or a Yankee.

No World Series, no statue.

Mussina got 76.7%.

Clemens and Bonds still not quite 60%.

Walker and Schilling get big boosts.

Berkman off the ballot. He probably needs more consideration.

Willing to bet Mussina goes in as a Yankee.

Rolen, Berkman, Helton deserve more support.
