I doubt it really is one win's worth though. High leverage innings will primarily go to O'Day and Johnson. Rodriguez will likely see less important situations.

I think this is a big part of the reason for bringing him in. The only 2 relievers Buck trusts in high leverage situations are O'day and Johnson. I doubt Rodriguez would be thrown into something immediately, but if he proves to be trustworthy, Buck will have another option to go to which helps out the pen immensely. Overworking those 2 could be disastrous at the end of the season, and there have been signs of this already.

I guess one way to look at it is that the team gave up a second tier prospect to solidify the 4th righthanded arm in their bullpen.

Maybe, at best, that is worth about 1 win...maybe more if someone gets hurt.

It is a steep price.

If Hunters struggles keep up, he could be a 3rd arm.

IG...I accidentally deleted your post but since we would have Peavy next year, he can be offered a qualifying offer.

So as long as the traded player gets a full season with his new team he can earn picks?

That is assuming JJ keeps his act together and O'Day stays nails. Neither are sure things.

Ditto for Rodriguez.

So you increase your odds.

Yes. You increase your odds on a very small number of innings.

I do think that the potential insurance policy for JJ that Rodriguez represents is a nice perk. O'Day and Hunter are better right now IMO, but KRod is more of a typical closer stylistically plus he has done it before.
That's what I said lol.

Yeah just reiterating, also people forget about Ray Lewis had his share of arrests before the murder trial (not sure if that's what you were alluding to). He wasn't found guilty in any of them I believe, but it would definitely be a red flag if he was a marginal player. To his credit, RL didn't have any problems after Atlanta.

Absolutely. Strop's issues caused problems for the pen across the board. It was harder to slot... it was hard to give guys rest. You had to overuse guys.

This counters that. So does Feldman's acquisition, and Chen getting back (providing depth and innings from the rotation).

I can buy that Rodriguez's direct contribution the rest of the way might be 1 win or less... but I think it will help Johnson, O'Day, and Hunter... and I think that is valuable.

I also agree with a previous post you said... you are in now... go get another bat.

BTW Strop with the Cubs:

9 games, 7.2 ip, 3 hits, 2 bb's, 10 k's, 0 er.

It wouldn't shock me if he pitches as well or better than Rodriguez the rest of the season.

The question I have is this...will Hammel or Gausman be better in the pen than KRod...or at least similar?

If so, then this is a waste of a move.

I really think this is more the Orioles thinking Delmonico is worse than his numbers suggest and won't be as good going forward.

Sure...Gregg could outpitch KRod....KRod could also be moved to closer and dominate down the stretch.

Was it bad that I came into the the thread thinking it was a trade scenario thought up and was going to say hell no! :) I liked Nick but do agree this is a go for it move and one that DD would make and Andy would not and that is why I like DD!

Edit to be fair AM would have waited till the off season and have gotten a 5 for one for Nick.

I am pretty sure Shack is thinking of PBR.

Not sure about Hammel being that good out of the pen, but I think Gausman or even Steve Johnson if healthy have a solid chance of being as good or better.

Certainly possible regardless of if he's closing.
