I mean, he is on pace to strike out about 100 times against A ball pitching.

Not sure how that bodes well or can be considered good.

The idea that its below league average means very little to me because A ball players, for the most part, will be going no where.

Now, the idea that he is K'ing BUT has a very good BA is the encouraging news.

He strikes out 16.9% of the time.

Machado struck out 18.5% of the time at A+. Wieters (who was a behemoth in his first year of pro ball) struck out 16.8% of the time at A+.

His K-rate should not even remotely be considered a red flag, IMO. BB-rate can be.

And he sucked as he moved up the ladder.  :)

The worry may not be heightened NOW but I do think you can be worried about how that plays in the higher minors and if you aren't walking and your approach/batting eye isn't as good, that will get exploited.

Again, the BA is good...that's encouraging.  I would be way more worried if he was hitting 270 or something like that.

Surprised at the promotion.  He was having a great year but still is pretty young.

The Baltimore Sun has more on him playing third: http://www.baltimore...0720-story.html

It will be interesting to see how this works out if the Orioles try this for most, if not all, of the remainder of the season.

Says something about Manny(could Manny go to SS or they know he's leaving). Also says they may not move Schoop off second anytime soon.

Well it's interesting because the concern was always noted as his lack of arm for the position, no?

Talking about Mountcastle on MASN pregame.  And yes the scouts concern was his arm at SS. So that's one of the reasons for the move to third.

Now the intersting factoid they mentioned. He is second in extra base hits.......in all of minor league baseball. This kid can hit.

Started AA in 81 PA's with a 167/185/269/454 (19K's / 2 BBs). In his last 59 PA's though, he's hit 281/288/491/779 (12Ks / 1 BB).

That's a rough K/BB rate but nice to see him level out a bit after adjusting (hopefully).

He probably needs to be in AA all season next year.

But by 2019, he may be entering into the ML roster picture for good.

He has to show he can do it in the upper minors though.

If you have doubts about his game, this is the offseason to deal him.

Overall, it's 135 PA at Bowie...  .215 / .229 / .363.

No worries, not disappointed.  But does show he needs to go back to Bowie to start '18.

He's also going to the AFL.

Had he crushed at Bowie right off the bat (and if Beckham had not been obtained); I could have seen a scenario where he pushed for a roster spot with the O's next Spring.

With Beckham being acquired (and what he's done)... and with the expectation that Manny will be back for '18 with or without an extension... now coupled with the early struggles for Mountcastle at Bowie....  Mountcastle can expect to spend the majority of next year in the Eastern League.

Not a bad situation.

My biggest question is will they keep him at 3rd to begin next year?

ESPN / Law:
http://www.espn.com/...er/post?id=7725

Orioles infielder Ryan Mountcastle is here and has shown more of the hard contact that got him a quick promotion this summer to double-A at age 20. He's playing third base, and his arm is ... still an enigma. He's made throws that showed no arm strength, but he made a throw in his first game from the foul line to first base without a hop, which was at least average arm strength. If he does that regularly, he can play third base, and his bat should profile there.
