What is up with his Tejada like OBP. That is pretty low for his avg.

Yeah, was just .319 last year at Delmarva. 25 bb's vs. 95 k's.
Haven't seen him, but numbers don't scream discipline.

It's good that Mountcastle is producing this year.
Not sure how serious a SS prospect he is, but the offensive output is interesting.

With the first half of his season winding down, Ryan Mountcastle is coming through with an impressive 2017.

Damn it would be nice if he could stick on SS.

I'd really love to see some better video of him. Youtube didn't have much. What little I could see looked solid, especially the bat speed. Very fluid, pulled his hands in a few times really well. But what the hell do I know.
I'd really like to see his arm strength for myself. Reports have varied more on this one skill than any I can recall for any O's prospect.

I haven't heard anyone say they think he has the arm to stick at SS. I'm usually all for giving guys time defensively (i,e. Sisco) but it seems inevitable that he will not be able to stay at SS because of his weak arm.

Mike Bordick didn't have great athleticsm or arm strength and he stuck at SS. A lot of it is positioning and baseball instincts. I wonder if this kid can be anything like Bordy, but with a better stick??

I saw Mountcastle a lot last year, and understand why his arm at shortstop is a concern. It's fine for routine plays, but its more of an issue on anything hit in the hole, which is why I'm sure there's doubts about him playing the position at the higher levels. I'd have to see him more this year to be certain as to whether it's getting any better.

He has 43 extra base hits in under 300 at bats.
The 10 walks and 52 Ks are the only issues. You may need to move him to AA to see if the K and BB numbers catch up to him against the better prospects.

Nothing at all wrong with the K-rate. It's good, actually, substantially below league average. It's just the lack of walks that is scary. But if you can hit what they throw as well as Mountcastle has been, why wouldn't you swing often? I'd like to hear scouting of his approach for more insight into the lack of walks. If it's similar to what we've seen from Trey Mancini up here this season, where he works himself into good counts, doesn't chase bad pitches when he's ahead, etc, then the low raw number of walks would be less concerning. If he swings at everything like Miguel Tejada and just happens to be able to hit all of it right now at Frederick, that's slightly more worrisome.
