The Orioles certainly do things their own way.   Only time will tell if they are/were right.    When you look at the Baseball America top 500, sure it looks like they could have gotten more guys on the list if they had done things differently.    However, the Orioles and, I assume all teams, don't draft according to the Baseball America top 500.    They clearly have their own list and went after the guys in that order.   It's easy to sit back (I do it too) and say they could nave gotten Mountcastle at pick #65 or #102 and drafted a higher ranked player with the supplemental pick.    The Orioles got the players they wanted and they feel confident about signing them all.   Just because they didn't get "my guy" or "your guy" doesn't make them wrong.

I've been going through this for years.   Each year someone cries about not taking this guy (Tim Melville) or that guy.    It usually doesn't amount to much in the end.    I like the strategy of taking power potential bats, particularly from HS, in the top ten rounds.   They are still long shots, as most picks are, but I like the upside.

He (Fenter) should cost about $400k and will probably take a bonus $250k overslot.

"The assigned slot value for that pick is $178,000, but Fenter, if he signs, could wind up with $700,000 or more. He is likely to get the club's fourth largest bonus behind the top three picks - DJ Stewart, Ryan Mountcastle and Jonathan Hughes."

1st-rder Ryan Mountcastle, @Orioles agree on $1.3 mil (pick 37 = $1,711,900). Florida HS SS, future 3B, bat speed, strong arm.

I guess i sort of agree.

I mean, it's great they didn't drag this out to the last day and pay slot so they did save some money against the pool for a guy like Gray Fenter (good selection)

....but slot at #68 is 907k.

Hopefully the guy puts everything together.

Maybe I'm confused, but (as of today) he's OPSing .721 in the GCL.  Ryan Mountcastle

Maybe that was his line 9 games ago?

Per Ryan Yinger Feb 24th
http://baltimorespor...ct-press-feb24/

Mountcastle, drafted 36th overall in the 2015 MLB Draft, finished the season hitting .296/.325/.393 between the GCL (Rookie) and Aberdeen (A-). Offensively, Moustcastle has great bat speed. He has a slightly open, spread out stance, and a minimal leg kick. He’s able to generate power thanks to good velocity through the zone. As he continues to grow, the raw power will develop.

Defensively, although he has played shortstop his entire career, he simply doesn’t have the quickness, nor the arm to play the position. In the Instructional League this fall, he was given an extended look at third base. Additionally, as he continues to physically develop, he may be forced off of third base – maybe to left field.

Going Forward:
At the plate, Mountcastle looks comfortable and shows a good feel for hitting, but without a defined position, being the 36th overall pick is questionable. He profiles more as a 3rd or 4th round pick. I suspect we could see him shift from shortstop to third base and even have a shot at second base or the outfield. His arm and foot-speed are below average which ultimately limits his value defensively. However, at 19 years old, he’s shown that he’s able to use all parts of the field and hit for power. He’ll likely begin the 2016 season with Delmarva (A).

Started ice cold, but starting to hit pretty well at Delmarva.

His first 10 games he was 5/38 with 1 HR, 2 BB, and 15 K.

In the 21 games since, he's got a 321/400/436 slash line in 90 PA with 11 BB and only 12 K.  No HR in that time, but 7 doubles and a triple.

SS Prospect of the week

http://m.mlb.com/new...ticle/183800128

SS: Ryan Mountcastle, Orioles (No. 6 prospect)
7 G, .469/.528/.813, 7 R, 5 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBIs, 4 BB, 6 K

The 2015 first-rounder began last week by going 5-for-6 with a home run for Class A Delmarva, and he never slowed down as he ultimately paced all shortstops with 15 hits and seven extra-base hits while batting a robust .469 with a 1.340 OPS over seven contests.

Its also amusing to read back over the beginning of this thread, same conversation about "reaching" just a different year.

What position does he play going forward?  2nd, LF?

Funny you say that, because it seems like the scouting reports are all over the place with regards to arm strength.  I'd love to get a look for myself.

I've been waiting for him to get to Bowie, same reason. I thought I read a while back that his arm was pretty good and he'd stick at SS, but then I saw something else this season that said he'd be moving positions eventually.

Reggie and Zach have spoken on Mountcastle several times on the on the podcasts, giving their opinions... some interesting thoughts. To encourage people to listen, won't state here.

Of course they've also had write-ups of him which can be found.

I listened boss.  Its the strangest thing, you can find someone who thinks he's got left side arm strength, and others who think he's a noodle arm.  I cannot recall such varied scouting reports about one specific thing.

At-least there isn't debate on the bat speed. Keep hitting, keep working, and a position will be figured out.

Maybe a couple of years from now Schoop goes to 3rd, Manny to SS, and Mountcastle takes over at 2nd.

Has continued to hit well all year since his ice-cold April.  1 great month (May), 2 really good months (June, August), 1 bad month (July), and 1 terrible month (April).

311/342/462/804 since May 1

286/347/430/756 for the year

Perhaps a bit concerning that he's destroyed lefties (925 OPS) while struggling against righties (694).  Last year he had opposite splits, 626 against LHP and 736 against RHP.
