Hope he comes back strong and gets extended.
Me too, but I do not think this is how this team operates.
Sucks for Means though. I think this year is going to be one where we see many injuries. I hope I am wrong, but the pitchers are getting ramped up fast.

Probably the best path forward. Far too often the rest thing turns out to be just delaying the inevitable. Hope for the best for him.

Fan of Means and what he's accomplished.
Nobody ever thinks they are going to get hurt. We discussed this after the first week of May last year. Everyone is going to be different. Think he wishes he'd worked a 5/55 already? He'll be under that (by a lot) now and the risk is all on the side of the team for the next 2 years.
I can't see the Orioles wanting to continue to pay him to wait this recovery out....which means (no pun intended) that the vultures will circle. He only really has one year of team control after 2023.
Mets or Phillies are my picks.

Probably won’t be back to normal until 2024.

Good.
@Ken_Rosenthal John Means has agreed to a two-year, $5.925M deal with the Orioles to avoid an arbitration hearing, source tells @TheAthletic.

I hadn't seen this. COTs has it as 2.95M and 2.975M over this year and next. Arbitration numbers were 2.7M and 3.1M.
I guess we're using the 2 year deal to get around the file and trial.
We'll continue to lose perspective on deals, nobody think this will happen and it's unfortunate, but it's costing him 10s of millions of dollars.

No update but a point of comparison. Dustin May had Tommy John surgery on May 11th 2021 and he's due to return to pitch for the Dodgers on Saturday August 20th.
Means' surgery was on April 27th.

I heard Means say he is hoping for a June return, which seems by May's timeline about a month optimistic. Different guys rehab faster so we will see.
I would like to see the Orioles plan as if Means is not going to be a 23 option, so if he comes back strong, it is all positive.

Just googling some that occurred recently.
Tyler Glasnow had it last August and hasn't pitched yet.
Spencer Turnbull had it last July and hasn't pitched yet.
Joey Lucchesi had it last June and hasn't pitched yet.
James Paxton had it last April and hasn't pitched yet.
Gunnar Hoglund had it last May and pitched his first game July 23rd.
May had it last May and pitched his first game July 16th.
Noah Syndergaard had it March 2020 and pitched his first game July 2021.
Chris Sale had it March 2020 and pitched his first game July 2021.
(I'm talking about real rehab games in the minors, not throwing or anything)
Seems like 14 months is reasonable enough for rehab to start, so June if all goes well. So Means' expectation isn't crazy if that's what he meant. Goes without saying that it could be worse.

May made a rehab start on July 16th. I was citing his planned return to MLB on Aug 20.
Right, I just wanted to see when people pitched in a real live game, even a rehab game, as to me once they get to that point they are probably pretty much medically cleared and it's more about working into shape. A month-ish after that seems reasonable.

I've been saying I expect +/- mid June for a return.
Full agreement you have to operate as if he's not going to be available.
