The Red Sox following the Yankees right out of the playoffs would be so sweet.

JD Martinez will not opt out of the last year of his contract.

My brother and I were discussing this last night.  If I'm Martinez, I'd opt out of the deal, let BOS QO me then accept the QO.  I lose 1M (18.4M vs 19.35M) in 2022, but with the QO, I can't get it next year.  Of course new CBA rules could change lots of things, but trading 1M for the QO freedom next year seems like ++ for the player given some likely similarities in the next deal.

Here's Bill James on the 2011 Red Sox:

Both the team and the front office were torn apart by serious, serious internal conflicts, which ended with Theo leaving Fenway in a gorilla suit.  Terry Francona was fired after a great run in Boston, although little of what happened was his fault; he had lost control of the team, but I don't know how anyone could have kept control of it; it was like keeping control of a field full of angry elephants.  The team was split 15 ways, split between pitchers and position players, split between the super-serious guys and the fun-loving guys, split between the drinkers and the pot smokers.   A couple of players were suspected of being. . . um.   insufficiently committed to good relations between the races.   One guy who had a great year for us was really kind of a criminal; another guy was just nuts.  One guy was just all in it for himself.  Too many people ran their mouths, to the press and to one another.  Most everybody on the team had a list of 10 teammates that he couldn't stand.  The leaders of the team--Varitek, Wakefield, Pedroia and Ortiz--were super guys, but it was just more than they could manage.

I'm not sure ANY team has ever had a worse collapse than that one.  And if anybody ever tries to tell you that team chemistry doesn't matter, man, they should have been there.

People describing the Red Sox in the past used to say 25 players, 25 cabs.  I guess the 2011 group was worst than that,

Okay… Jacoby Ellsbury and Adrian Gonzalez

Which one was the criminal and which one was nuts?

Gonzalez was moved around a ton. Especially for being a talented guy picked 1-1 overall. He was certainly one of the two.

Superstar SS Trevor Story choosing one of 4 teams soon. Giants, Red Sox and 2 others remain in mix. Prioritizing winning. Apparently considering a short-term positional move, if necessary.

I like this move for the RedSox and has been pointed out in other National discussion, if Xander opts out of his contract, they slide him over to SS.

Injury yesterday was fluky... but Sale missed all of '20, had 9 starts in '21, and has had 2 starts in '22.

After 3 successive years of 200+ innings in '15-'17, he hasn't pitched more than 158 in '18.

Still owed a lot:

Losing to the Blue Jays 25-3…in the 5th inning.

Lol! Please let the O’s off that 30 run hook.

It seems like every day I see a clip of a Red Sox player losing a ball in the lights.  Not sure what's going on there.

He didn't even run after it after the ball landed. I understand he was probably in shock, but still.
