I actually hadn’t read that but makes sense. He needs his hands to soften as the speed of the game ramps up at each level.

It's an issue until in Spring Training it's no longer one because he spent a good chunk of the upcoming offseason at some performance academy out in the desert working on his fielding tools.

Two good entries from Roch on Coby Mayo.

Agent on Coby Mayo: "Now you ask teams and they’d all take him in the first round"

Trainer on Coby Mayo: “We started seeing that he’s the real deal"

Couple things. Parts of other threads, but I'll consolidate here.

1) Big fan of Mountcastle, but you have to make choices.  There are a lot of needs at 1B in MLB so finding really good opportunity for RM should be (should be) easy.  Note for him and the team that trades for him.  Look at the current FA list in January.  Ryan, tell your agent to lock in that 6/50 type deal.

2) I want Mayo competing for RoY in 2024 so roster Day 1.

3) I would do 8 years for Mayo right now. Probably something like 8/65 (1Ms/b, 0.7, 0.8, 1.0, 5.0, 9.0, 12.5, 15.0, 15.0, 5Mb/o TMOPTs)

So you'd jettison Mountcastle to open up opportunity for Mayo?

I agree except under the condition that dude laid out of getting a longterm deal before opening day.

O's aren't extending any young talent early. As good as Elias is, he's not going to be allowed to do that.

It should be realistic as long as Mayo is open to it. I even doubt that Angelos would be against it.

Now is it a good idea? I don't know Mayo nearly as well as Bob and others that follow much more closely, but it's at least intriguing.

No money is being committed long term under this ownership. None. Is what it is.

Youre likely gonna get 7 years of team control from Mayo anyway. No need to risk that money for 1 extra year. Hypothetically, if your confident in Mayo and want to lock him up start discussing a 10+ yr deal.

And while anything is possible Mayo isnt a particularly strong ROY candidate. You bring him along slower like most others not named Gunnar Henderson or Adley Rutschman.

Angelos isn't committing $80 million plus to someone who's never had a MLB AB. Elias is forward thinking, but he's handcuffed by Angelos.

The Orioles only consider contract extensions once the said player has priced himself out of their budget.

So you're no longer off the opinion that the O's were serious about Bassitt and whoever else?

I do think Elias is likely able to commit on a 2 or 3 yr mid to smaller FA deal but still officially Im in prove it to me territory

The next contract longer than a year with an option will be the first, correct? Elias has never signed anyone for multiple years.

That's pretty crazy considering he's been here since late 2018.

Technically Bautista and Means since they had TJ surgery. And yes, theyve had team option years as well. But thats it

Not necessarily. I would look to move Mounty over the next few years if his value is strong. I see Mayo much more than a strict 1B, more of a 3B/RF/1B/DH. I do think he’s ready to make a good run at that RoY draft pick and would be amenable to a long term deal right now.
