If the Orioles are serious about getting better, they are going to have to build a staff around the young pitchers.

Agree 100 percent. But in 2022 we’re still going to be running out the same dreck as those young pitchers continue to develop in the minors.

Harvey threw 127 innings in 28 starts..... roughly 4.5 IP per outing. I wouldn't consider that eating innings.

Hey that’s 4.5 IP the bullpen or some other scrub, who somehow could have been worse, didn’t have to pitch.

Meh. 170 innings a year is arguably an inning eater in todays MLB

I think we can probably sign someone for near the minimum who can give us the innings Harvey gave us and maybe keep an ERA under 6.

Snacked on innings. He ordered them as apps.

But part of this is on Hyde. I am not advocating for him to be reckless with pitchers but he’s had a quick hook with SPs all year. If you’re going to ride someone, it’s a guy like Harvey.

Zimmerman was the one starter who actually did not give the job back last year.  He did well yesterday and I think he is a pretty sure bet to start in the rotation.

Another good outing today.

Combined in his two outings, he's started out:

9ip, 7 hits, 0 er, 4 bb's, and 10 k's

He actually looks like he belongs. You could see that from his first few starts last year.

Yes he does.  He also looks to be challenging hitters more and that makes his changeup more effective.  The pride of Loyola High School is doing well.

It looked like he wanted to go back out for the 6th yesterday.  The kid has some bulldog in him.

It definitely feels like in some ways pitchers are more ahead of hitters than usual after this compact Spring training, so I'm taking some of this success with a grain of salt. But I do think Zimmerman is pretty likely to be at least a consistent, usable MLB pitcher as a back-end starter or long relief guy for the next several years if he stays healthy.

He IMO is very similar to Means, minus a few ticks on the fastball.

I also think he benefits significantly from the new left field wall.

Leaguewide OPS is down a little bit over the past couple seasons.

For 2022 the OPS for the league through 11 days of games is 690.

In 2021 the OPS for the league, with pitchers batting in the NL, through 11 days was 713.  This dearth of offense was such a problem for the league that they instituted the rules about checking pitchers for substances.

In 2020 after the abbreviated "spring" the OPS through 11 days was 709.  It was July so warmer weather.
