Unfortunately there are worse players in the Hall, although probably not many, and most, if not all of them were elected by veteran's committees.

According to JAWS, my suspicions are correct as Baines is the 7th worst HOF'er by that metric and the 11 worst were are elected by veterans committees (and 22 out of the 25 worst).

I feel really bad for Baines.

He didn't ask for any of this and now he's gotta read about how crappy a player he was.

Baines was awesome.  Such a beautiful swing.

I really respect what he was as a player, he just shouldn't be a HOFer.

Totally get what you are saying though.... he didn't expect or ask for this... it's got to be bitter sweet reading some of the reaction.

End of the day though, he gets the plaque.

For me as a fan, Baines is a HOFer. But if given the right to vote, no, I couldn't justify putting him in.

But I would say that I'd give my left pinky to put a young Harold Baines in the Oriole lineup on a long-term contract.

Good post.   Baines was very good, and he had one of the sweetest swings I have ever seen.

If Harold is in, Edgar Martinez has a good case too.

Yeah, I'm sure he'll be fine. Also, if he has decent self awareness and knowledge of what it takes to be a HOF'er, he knows he's not worthy.

Also, people aren't saying he sucks. They're saying he's not one of the best 250 players to ever play the game. Big difference.

Edgar already had a good case.

I doubt the writers are going to consider this much at all since it's such an outlier.

If 2,800-some hits gets you in the HOF, shouldn't 4,000+ do the same?

Asking for a friend.

Seems like a good bet.

Baines & Lee Smith are in the Hall, but Pete Rose, Barry Bonds, & Roger Clemens aren't.

A bit odd.

While I think Rose should be in, he was at least actually banned from baseball.  Bonds and Clemens are out based on pure suspicion and bitter writers pretending their opinions matter more than they should.

Bill Ballou (Worcester Telegram): Mariano Rivera not getting this writer’s Hall of Fame vote

I suggest reading this, not just because I think he makes a few decent points based around reliever usage and having their value come from perception instead of results, but for the fairly surprising twist at the end.

I don’t care to read click bait.

HOF voters who try to make themselves bigger than the ballot are annoying

Fine with this, since he's not turning in a ballot, Mo is still at 100%.

Mussina is doing great so far, I think he's a lock next year.

Speaking of the HOF tracker, it's great to see Edgar doing so well. Meanwhile, while Halladay is a worthy candidate, 93% seems high.

Totally agree. Didn't see that coming at all. Halladay I mean.

I bet a lot of voters felt that if Baines was in they had to vote for Edgar

Certainly can't hurt Edgar. I think many ignore the most egregious committee selections, but at the same time this is likely all the excuse some need to vote for a worthy DH.
