I think now that they are out of the playoff race, selling pieces off, I think they want to try and hit the reset button on him. It doesn't sound like it's ill willed, because of lack of effort, leadership, anything like that. Here's a quote from Hurdle...

I just encouraged him, in some situations like this, what I’ve seen happen with good players, you just unplug them,” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said, per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Good for the Pirates.

These guys get coddled way too much. You need to do what's best for the team and put your ego aside. If you are a good teammate and want to win, that's exactly what you will do.

The coach and team should definitely do what's best for the team. At the same time they've known all offseason they'd most likely be putting him in RF. I think a guy of that caliber should be told ASAP.
