ESPN: Jung Ho Kang has torn MCL, broken tibia from Chris Coghlan slide
That was a cheap shot.

That was a cheap shot.
Yes it was. It was fine to try to take out the guy while he's throwing, but you have to be responsible about it... you can't jump right into a guy's knee like that...

Disagree, its a clean slide. Wasn't too late, wasn't too far from the bag, wasn't too high, and his spikes weren't up. He ends up getting him on the knee, but only because Kang steps forward towards the runner to make the throw, when Coghlan started the slide it would have been well below the knee had Kang not stepped forward. Kind of like a helmet-to-helmet call where the defender targets the chest, the receiver ducks or crouches, and the contact ends up being head-to-head. That's not dirty.

I'd say it was #2 and 3 on your article. He doesn't hit the ground until after he hits him so it's clearly a late slide. Whether it's high or not is in question but his leg and feet are in the air the whole time. And technically he was still in the basepath but he altered his slide to go into the infielder.
It's dirty.

It's only even borderline high because of Kang's motion, not because of anything Coghlan did. It's pretty late, I'll agree, but late and low isn't dirty, and it's a late and low slide until Kang moves into him and changes the contact point.
Wasn't linking the article to support or refute either opinion, just thought it was interesting.

Think it would have been borderline regardless.
If he hit the ground first then we're not having this discussion. But especially given that the Cubs and Pirates are going to play in the wild-card game you have to avoid all appearances of a cheap shot.
It's opinion though. And I wouldn't be as against if it was literally any other team that did this.

It's not like Kang's throwing motion was a big surprise full of unexpected movement...
I don't think it was about bad intent... I think it was mainly poor/crude sliding technique... he went in to do something, and I don't think his goal was to ruin the guy's season... but he's not good enough, skill-wise, to pull it off properly... it was the sliding equivalent of reckless driving...
