He's mashing in the WBC. Sign of good things to come? I mean these aren't spring training games. Cuba is ranked # 1 in the world.

Its just one game, so you can only take so much from it.

That being said, it could help build confidence, which is always a good thing going forward.

I watched the game from the 3rd inning on, after the Dominican/Venezuela game ended. Schoop definitely dsiplayed quick hands and a real strong arm on the DP. If he only has average range, which I couldn't tell last night, he looks above average on turning two. He looked like he was selective at the plate. Didn't see his first two AB's (strikeout and double). Looks like he likes the ball on inner half and is looking to pull. Great swing on the homerun as opposed to the other night when he kind of uppercutted the nanging slider. I'd like to see him drive a ball or two to RF but he looks pretty good.

I think that is about right. Schoop is quick around the base IMO, but just not quick in a range aspect.

Schoop is off to his typical slow start whenever he goes to a new level. AAA is fairly aggressive for him though, at such a young age, so we'll see how long it'll take him to adjust and get back to being productive. The only real encouraging thing, though it's early, is there's an 89 point margin with his OBP/BA. That's good to see at a higher level like this.

Update on Schoop's injury, per Roch:

Triple-A Norfolk infielder Jonathan Schoop will receive a second opinion on his lower back on Friday. He's currently on the seven-day disabled list with a "strain," but the injury could be more serious.

Showalter wouldn't elaborate, but he said that he's hoping the "second guy disagrees with the first guy."

Schoop is widely regarded as the top position prospect in the organization. He's batting .268/.331/.386 with six doubles, three homers and 18 RBIs in 34 games with the Tides.

Update: Executive vice president Dan Duquette told reporters that Schoop has been diagnosed with a stress fracture in his lower back. He could need six-to-eight weeks of recovery time, depending on the second opinion, which will come next week in California.

Update on Schoop from Luke Jones today:

Infield prospect Jonathan Schoop received a second opinion on the stress fracture in his lower back on Wednesday that provided a slightly more optimistic prognosis of four weeks of rest. The hope is that the 21-year-old could be back playing in five to six weeks, which would have him back in action at around the All-Star break.

That's better, but this injury comes close to eliminating Schoop from consideration to helping the O's before September.

Agreed. I don't think he would have been able to contribute this year anyway. (Not saying the O's would've called up, they probably would've, but I just don't think he would have made a positive contribution if they had)

But is this an injury that makes him not tradeable?

Absolutely. Back injuries are troubling. He wasn't enough of an asset before the injury, now he has to prove he can play after.
