Anyone else notice all the fans that were leaving the game early yesterday, around the 12th inning? I could only tell on MASN by the empty seats. On YES(which I only saw through SportsCenter highlights), they had a shot of Half Streets with fans headed toward Metro or their cars. Pretty pathetic if you ask me, given it was a day game, weather wasn't that bad(just wait until August), they are in first place, and they are playing the Yankees, who only play there once every 3-6 years. Not to mention, Yankee games were the most expensive of the year, they specially priced them at "marquee" for this series only.

I don't see the big deal. It's not like they were leaving in inning 7.

People budget an amount of time that they expect to spend at a baseball game. How long time-wise had the game gone on to that point? What inning is it acceptable to leave at? 14? 17? Do they have to stay there until the very end to retain their fan cards in your book? How many families were there with antsy kids? People with things to do that the time was pushing into? Not everyone is going to enjoy another hour or two or more of "free baseball" at the stadium.

Yes, there are exceptions like everything else, maybe some people had to be somewhere at 5. The game began at 1 PM though, not at 7. I just don't think it reflects well on the fanbase when you are leaving the most compelling, anticipated series of the year early. If the Nats were in last place and they were playing the Padres it would be one thing. I've noticed Nats fans have been priding themselves recently on how "good" their fanbase is, how it isn't the opposing team "taking over" the stadium. I have to think Yankees fans were staying while Nats were leaving. So yes, it reflects poorly on their fanbase because of everything I just mentioned.

Extra innings isn't a good thing for everyone, especially when most of the fanbase are casual and bandwagon fans. Be happy that they bought tix and ignore the rest.

While I'm going to consider voting for Chipper (between him, Harper and Bourn, it is a tough call this year--I'm leaning towards Bourn), I saw an interesting point today, I think by Rob Neyer. He said that Chipper Jones already had his "final season sympathy vote" LAST year, when he wasn't hitting well but made the team because everyone thought it would be his last time.
