Love the Padres getting Manaea.  Obviously the Dodgers are great, and being without Tatis for months isn't something you just overcome... but the Padres still have a lot of talent.

They have to be setting up a trade for an OFer.  They now have 7 contract starters with 3 AAA/ML guys behind them and they've already put Lamet in the pen.

For me, it would be a team like the Royals or Mets.

Royals were his original team and you can get an OFer or 2 for the trouble..

Met's would be the other one with Cano as an offset.  Do something like Cano and Dom Smith for Hosmer and Hassell.  You have some money you need to bump around and then Cano just gets released and goes to the house.

Couldn't remember where I posted this.

The framework for this deal just fell through.  The reported deal was...

Dom Smith for Hosmer, Paddack, Pagan and 30M.  The above gets it done better (add Paddack, adjust cash)

Hader to SD for Rogers, Limet, and a couple prospects is wild. I love change of scenery trades like this.

The Padres win the Juan Soto sweepstakes.  They also land Josh Bell.

Woah.  Machado, Tatis, and Soto all on the same team.  That's crazy.

CJ Abrams was a top-20 prospect prior to the year.  Played great at AAA, struggling in his MLB debut.

Hassell and Wood are #1 and #3 in the SD system.  #21 and #88 overall.

Susana is an 18 y/o in rookie ball.  #14 in SD system.

They got Bell, too, so subtract some value out of the return.  Wood & Susana is too much for a rental of Bell alone, but Susana probably isn't quite enough.

They basically traded two stud (top-25) prospects and one other top-100 prospect for Soto.

Mackenzie Gore also going to the Nats, and the Nats are taking on Eric Hosmer.

Soto is great but damn that seems to be a lot.

Hosmer is holding up the trade trying to get more added on to his already over priced contract.  If he screws this deal up, he is going to get seriously booed in SD.

Good for him.  He's got a no-trade clause.  He should get something if they want him to waive it.

Hosmer nixed his going to the Nats.  The deal is going through without him.  The Pads have 5 hours to trade him to one of the 19 teams not on his limited no trade contract.

Luke Voit took Hosmer's place in the trade and is heading to Washington.

So they shipped Voit and Hosmer - did that get them under the luxury tax threshold?

They’re paying for Hosmer’s entire salary while he’s with the Red Sox.

With all the focus on Soto in his big Padres debut tonight, it’s Brandon Drury who hits a grand slam in his first pitch seen as a Padre. Love it. Baseball is neat.
