Nothing like locking up a guy until he's 41. Now to make room for their newly acquired $280 million shortstop, I guess the Padres are going to have to relocate their $340 million shortstop to the outfield.

I didn't know money trees were native to that part of Southern California.

Maybe, not sure what the date of this article is:

This year, the Padres signed a new $1.2 billion television contract with FOX, bringing their annual broadcast package from $14 million a year to an average of $60 million.

Manny can opt out of his contract after this coming season. Given the deals some other infielders have fetched thus far, it'll be interesting to see if he chooses to do so and test the market again at the age of 31.

Don't talk to me about getting old. I'm at the age now where I warn people if they ask how I'm doing, I'm going to tell them.

The Padres have the good fortune (both literally and figuratively) of being locked into a $1 billion deal where the money is guaranteed despite these regional sports networks bleeding subscribers. From what I understand, their market also includes and brings in revenue from Las Vegas as well.

This is something the Orioles don't have, which isn't to say they couldn't spend more. They just don't have the luxury of that level of guaranteed income.

They signed a 20-year, $1.2B TV deal in 2012.  Looks like it started at $30M in year 1.  They're halfway through the deal, so it's probably at about $60M in 2023.

Slightly dated info, but it doesn’t look that great to me. This estimate has the 2019 payout in the bottom half of MLB, and lower than the Orioles (he explains the O’s/Nats difference lower on the page). What jumps out with the Padres deal is just the overall number and length. There’s security in that, but it can also be a burden if local rights fees take a big jump in other similar sized markets.

I’d say the biggest impetus behind the Padres’ activity is simply an owner who would like to win.

The good thing about a long TV contract is that you get paid a lot for rights at the end of the deal.

I read that:

  1. The Padres signed a 20-year deal in late 2012
  2. It was worth $1.2B
  3. The 2023 rights fees were $30M

Assuming the same percentage increase each year, that works out to a 6.75% annual increase in order to total to $1.2B in 30 years.  It also means, that over the next 10 years, SD's TV deal is worth about $800M, and by the last year of the deal, the rights fees would be over $100M.

I guess I don't really know, but with all of the cord-cutting going on, I doubt that many teams could get a 10/$800M TV deal starting in 2023.

These deals are always backloaded, so it definitely stands to reason the Padres will get much more in Year 20 than Year 1. National-based TV deals continue to see large increases in value, but you generally have a whole league, and their playoff, included in those. So with them, shorter is usually better so you can get back on the open market more often. RSNs are a somewhat different animal.

Old Man’s quote indicates the deal was with FOX. That’s probably dated, and it’s a network FOX sold to Disney, who then flipped it to Sinclair, and they rebranded it as Bally’s Sports. If so, I know that business is not doing well, and I’ve even seen the B-word mentioned in recent articles about them. So that future money might not be as secure as originally thought, though it’s probably unlikely it comes to that.

Nelson is 41 bombs shy of 500.  I wonder if he is trying to hold on long enough to get there.  It is not likely but give them hell Nelson.

Remember the winter of 2014, when a 34 yr old Nelson was too old to commit 3 years to?

Good news! I saw a dog today.

Padres throwing money around like it's nothing.

He's been very good for a while, but that's a risky deal for a guy who's turning 37 in August.
