The U.S. goes up 1-0 in the eighth minute off an Alex Morgan cross to a running Carli Lloyd, who headed the ball in.

"Shannon Boxx able to tidy things up."

Yeah, I'm having an immature moment as I snicker.

Japan provided some scary moments, but at the half the U.S. hold their 1-0 lead.

Carli Lloyd with an inspired strike into the far side from 20 yards to stake the U.S. to a 2-0 lead in the 54th!

New attendance mark for women's football - 80,203 beats the old mark of 76,489 set at the 1996 final in Atlanta between the U.S. and China.

Spain scored the last three goals, but the dominance of Team USA was far too great earlier in the game, and the U.S. women take the gold medal, defeating Spain 8-5.

Golden afternoon for the U.S. women! Less than 10 minutes after the water polo team gets gold, the football team follows suit with a tightly played, 2-1 victory over Japan. It won't make up for the 2011 WWC meltdown, but still a great achievement.

She saved the game on that turnover. Can't believe they won in spite of that terrible defense. Love me Alex Morgan though.
