MASN / Kubatko: http://www.masnsport...-5-4-win-1.html

"..Showalter believed that starter Jake Arrieta had good stuff tonight. Command was a challenge for him," Showalter said. "He goes through periods where it's not as much of a challenge for him as it is right now. He's got to work through it. Stuff that he's working on it all the time. It's about repeating the delivery and getting the ball where he needs to get it. He had a lot of counts, some close pitches that didn't go his way. But when you're not commanding the strike zone, you're not going to get the benefit of the doubt there."

I don't think anyone expected him to struggle at AAA. I think the best case scenario at this point is he dominates AAA for a few months, maybe gets a start or two against some bad lineups in Baltimore, and is part of a trade near the deadline. Who knows, maybe if he pitches well he could be the main piece in a Chase Utley type trade?

Good #'s... I wish it made me feel better about him.

Per Roch:

Arrieta, making his first appearance since May 7, took the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) and one hit in his only inning, with two walks, one strikeout and a wild pitch. He threw 24 pitches, 11 for strikes.

I'd rather him struggle initially in the pen than pitch well in the rotation where we know he can't carry it over. Let him relieve for a month and see where he's at.

@masnRoch just tweeted that Arrieta is listed to start for Norfolk in 3 days. Guess the bullpen appearance was just about getting him into a game.

I think I read that he was supposed to follow Wada in a game to make sure both of them got work.

At least the O's are off tonight so he can watch all the cross fit he wants without being hassled.

"Arrieta maybe needs to be out of there," the scout said. "Maybe he could do something someplace else. I don't know what the deal is with him, but it's certainly not working. With his stuff ... He reminds me a lot of Phil Hughes. He throws so many pitches right down the middle and he gives up a zillion home runs. He's got good stuff, but his fastball is pretty straight, like Arrieta, and he gets too much of the plate and gets hammered.

"The thing about pitching, and what he's got to learn about pitching, is that when you get in trouble, go softer, not harder. Arrieta goes harder. That's the one thing (Chris) Tillman has learned is to throttle down. He used to rear back and throw 10 fastballs as hard as he could. Now he softens up and goes the other way. It just works out better for you.

"I think Arrieta, when he gets in trouble, goes a little too hard and it snowballs on him. He doesn't pitch and he loses his composure. He just panics. The one thing about Steve Johnson is, he doesn't have that kind of stuff, but he won't panic. He still pitches his game."

Really looks like not trading him when he had at least some value was a horrible decision.

I was at the AAA game tonight and got to see Jake live. He looked horrible at times and fascinating at others, just like he usually does. He was throwing his 4S 93-97 but of course it had no movement at all and a lot of times was right over the middle of the plate. I was on the 3rd base line a few rows off the dugout to start then moved to center to see if he had any movement.

Russ Canzler looked amazing going 4-4, every ball he hit was hard.

I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?
