They’ll sign Honeycutt but it looks like maybe they are trying to go under or maybe his agent is trying to get a little extra over slot. 3 HS players down, Nate George left. Does Honeycutt have anything to do with George?

No, George is signing. Talking to his agent about having him on the podcast.

Cool. That would leave Isiah Salinas, the 19 yo LHP and Honeycutt.

Doing this hastily so don't fully trust the numbers yet, but think they're about $50k over the pool right now.

Leaves just under half a million left to play with to get Honeycutt, George and Salinas signed overslot.  It's $3.8M for Honeycutt, $150k for the other guys, so they can spend almost $4.6M to get it done.

Bob says George is basically signed. No idea on the numbers.

So does this mean they are unlikely to sign Salinas?

They can give him a similar overpay as George just got if Honeycutt takes a small haircut.

They've got about $150-200k to play with right now. More or less depending on how much below or above slot Honeycutt signs.

Yeah I was assuming they weren't getting Honeycutt for anything below slot. I understand little of how these negotiations work, but seems like if he was willing to go underslot they'd have signed him by now.

If Honeycutt doesn’t sign I think they are at 4.98% over. Could still give Salinas like 151k.

If he signs they are at 3.2% over and have a little under 200k extra to give him and/or Salinas.

If I did the math right. Hopefully it’s the latter.

Is there any risk of Honeycutt not signing? He's a college guy right?

I'd have said no risk up until recently. Probably still would say the same. Full expectation that he signs but things go haywire sometimes.

No idea. He was probably top 10 before the season, maybe he’s bitter…but also some thought he’d drop out of the first so maybe the team is trying to get more for the other guy. You’d hope they knew his number on draft day.

Salinas can be a draft and follow as a JUCO guy. Honeycutt will sign.

Where does the money come from for a draft and follow? (he asks without googling)

I believe I remember something like you can sign the draft and follow up to within a week of next years draft for up to 250K. Anything over 250K will be counted against next year’s draft pool.

Jim Callis of MLB.com

“The draft-and-follow rule returns, allowing clubs that select players who opt to attend junior college to sign them between the end of their juco season and the beginning of the next year's Draft. Any bonus amount over $225,000 will count toward teams' bonus pools. A similar rule existed before being eliminated with the 2007-11 CBA.“

4M. Seems like they went to 5% over, good stuff. (By my math they went over but I’m sure that’s not right, maybe Honeycutt is a few k less than 4M)
