4M. Seems like they went to 5% over, good stuff. (By my math they went over but I’m sure that’s not right, maybe Honeycutt is a few k less than 4M)

Yeah there is a rounding error or bad report somewhere for like $10k or so.

A+ from me.

I can't really judge the guys they picked, but I can judge using every penny possible and they did that.

They also spent a little more on the 11-20th kids exclusive of the over $150k amount.  Last year they gave the full $150k or more to 5 kids, $100k to one $30k to one, and three unsigned.  This year they gave $150k or more to 6 kids plus $100k to one, $50k to one $25k to one and only one unsigned who is gonna go to JuCo and could get signed next year still for up to $225k (as per Richard's source above).

I guess if you wanted to get really picky they could've drafted 3 more $150k kids instead of the $25k, $50k, and $100k kids.  Probably no difference between the $100k and $150k guys, but $25-50k might be even less likely to contribute than a later round $150k kid.

Nice to use all the resources you have available and they've done that.  Great job.

Apparently you can give $2,500 when they sign that doesn’t have to count against the pool, or something like that. That must be where the extra is.

They could have played hardball with Honeycutt but I guess they figured no big deal, let’s just get him signed. Hard to believe he would have walked away from slot money.

Salinas?  They got him to accept $150k?  Because they were basically at the max after signing Honeycutt.

Why make it simple when you can have bizarre exceptions and amendments to every rule?

Orioles love their late round and UDFA pitching.

I think this is what's funny about the rules.  It feels like sometimes they make things up so that fans can't actually do the math.  We have secret numbers and you don't know them, so stand back, stand by and shut up.

So same thing with Salinas, right?  Did they sign him before the deadline? Or we saw some of the other narrative where you can sign a JuCo for 250k? Or if you sign them over that amount it counts against next year?  Could they wait until after the deadline, sign him for 450k and they are just taking a 200k hit against next year?

I support crazy stuff like that.  Use the rules that exist, just funny how we can't know until someone explains it after the fact.  Then you think you know it for next time and you find out...oh no, that changed 2 years ago....huh?

You think every pick will be signed. I actually hope you’re right but I certainly think they’re are valid reasons to be skeptical of that.

Don't be skeptical.

In a preview for next year, the Orioles will have a lot of (extra) draft picks and sign them all.

Maybe as many as 4 extra picks

- Competitive Balance (B round this time)

- Losing Burnes

- Losing Santander

- Cowser winning ROY

Is the point of sharing that article, that sometimes kids say 'no'?

Milwaukee only signed 16 of their 22 picks? That seems like a rather low number.

Obviously, in the draft, time will tell, but the Brewers used the Orioles CompA pick as part of the value for Burnes and is doesn't feel like they did much with that opportunity.  Maybe they got kids they really like (their projection), but kind of blah if that was my draft.  On draft day, the draft shows kept talking about what the "Brewers would do" and again, kind of blah.

On the signings, this is kind of my point with the Orioles.  The Orioles aren't drafting guys they don't think they can sign.  The Brewers (that article) seemed to draft a kid that had some questions.  I don't know MIL's process, but I'd suggest that's not what the Orioles are doing.

...and when Richard points out the Orioles didn't sign 4 players (including a 3rd rd) in 2022 and 3 players in 2023, that would exactly be my other point about those 2 drafts.

Side note: I talked about Chase Harlan who the Dodgers selected the pick after the Orioles took Overn.  He signed for ~1M over slot so if you know that (and they should/would) then he just may not fit into the overall draft and that's ok.

Now let's trade Beavers to the Dodgers for him.

The point of sharing the article is to show another good organization with a plan and a backup plan. They didn’t sign the guy they really wanted and “pivoted” to 4 other guys. They didn’t sign 5 picks. If they had managed to sign Levonas that number would even be higher. The plan doesn’t always include signing every pick. I guess that’s the main point.

Again, I’m happy the Orioles signed every pick, which is the first time in the last three drafts.

But not like the last two. Your turn.
