$3.2 million for our worst pitcher.

Pound wise and penny foolish is, I suppose, better than the other way around, but it seems odd to be fine with paying Matusz and Hunter what they got while at the same time being very stingy with better players.

Hunter's salary seems like a lot, but borders on reasonable for a solid late-inning reliever. Especially for just one year. I'd rather pay him that than have non-tendered him. Trading him and getting something in return might be better than either of those options, but someone would happily take Hunter for the amount we agreed to pay him.
Matusz is ridiculous. I'd much rather have cut him. He's useless against RHP and wasn't even that great against LHP last year. If he gets back to dominating LH like in 2012 and 2013, then he's worth having around, but $3.2M is a lot to pay for a LOOGY, if he is even that any more.

$3.2 million for our 7-run lead specialist seems high.

I will forever hate Brian Matusz strictly for the Raul Ibanez game. I wouldn't pay him 3 cents.

He can start the 5th inning when we're losing by 13.But Matusz still wants to be a starter...

* Showalter sent Brian Matusz and others to minor league camp Saturday to throw live batting practice, and the left-hander figures to pitch against the Tigers on Tuesday in Lakeland or Wednesday in Sarasota.
Showalter said he wants to stretch out Matusz this spring, enabling the reliever to work on his changeup. Matusz logged six innings over three Grapefruit League games last spring, but those statistics don't reflect appearances in B and simulated games. He had a few scheduled appearances washed away by rain and was sent to minor league camp.
"As far as I know, the plan is to get stretched out and hopefully get the opportunity to get in there and take advantage of whatever opportunity is given to me, but I think the ultimate goal is to not only work on the changeup, but work on fastball location and command of all four pitches. Get the curveball going and get the slider going and get all four pitches going," Matusz said.
"I think the reasoning behind that is obviously the more innings you throw and the more work you get, the better you can be. That's the ultimate goal.
"I'm not sure what their plan is. I heard just get stretched out, but if there's an opportunity to get a start, I'd love to embrace that opportunity if it were to arise. But, shoot, I wouldn't mind getting stretched out as far as the starters get stretched out, as long as the innings are there and the opportunity is there. I'm full-go for any opportunity that presents itself."

I know Matusz was better in the second half last year. He struck out 26 and walked 4 in just under 20 innings in the second half.
Of course, he saw his innings go down when they got Miller because Miller is good. So, that always hurts things for the pitchers who aren't.
The problem is, BMat can't get out righties and is good but not great vs lefties.
How on earth did Duq and Buck think it was smart to give him 3.2M to pitch this year?
I mean, after a strong second half, how was he rewarded in the postseason? He pitched .2 innings vs KC(where he gave up a big homer of course). So, how much confidence could they have really had in him? Just doesn't make sense.

I think his change-up looks better this year, but yeah... he continues to frustrate.

That's the one and only thing about the off-season that I didn't understand...
I can understand not wanting to let him walk if you think you can trade him, but they guessed wrong about that...
