At the absolute minimum, this is going to be an above average defense, with an above average secondary.
That's the absolute minimum.
I tend to agree, barring injuries. But Humphrey, Stephens and Wiggins are all above average at worst. Hamilton and Williams are both well above average at worst. Hamilton is borderline elite at his position if we're being honest. I think the secondaries issues lie more with the man placing them, than it does with their talent. Macdonald struggled big time in his first season, and he had prior DC experiences at the power 5 level in college. We went to a guy with 0 experience as a DC at any high level. He's going to have a learning curve. I feel like his initial gameplans have been extremely good. I think his issues turn towards adjustments after the offense adjusts to his initial gameplan.
Macdonald last season was phenomenal at in-game adjustments. He had opposing offenses off balance every game. And when they thought they figured out how to respond, he adjusted and took their adjustments away. The Miami game is a perfect example. Miami came out and looked unstoppable. Macdonald changed up his coverages, and Miami had no answer.
It's going to be a while before we see if Orr can get anywhere close to that level. If he can figure out how to adjust in game better, the defense can be a top unit again.
