Lamar revolutionized the position of quarterback and to me, that's not debatable. There has never been a dual quarterback (Vick included) that impacted the game with both his legs and arm as much as Lamar has. He can take over a game single handedly and affect the outcome. Yes, the rules of the game and how it was played in different eras makes it almost impossible to compare players but with Lamar Jackson, you're essentially getting Barry Sanders and Peyton Manning in one player. Will there ever be another quarterback in the future who will be even better? Perhaps. But for right now, Lamar stands alone on top of the mountain as the most devastating, game changing quarterback this sport has ever seen. And the best part about it, is we're all here to witness it.

I'm ok with saying Jackson is the best QB in today's game. I jump off the wagon when people say greatest of all time. It is impossible to compare QB's of today to those who played in the 70's or even before. The running game today's QB's are able to play would have gotten them destroyed in the early to mid 70's. The game is so much easier for QBs today. That's why guys like Jayden Daniels are able to do what they do as rookies. That could have never happened in the 70's.
QB's used to be routinely abused in the 70's. The NFL started to protect them even back then. That led to a Jack Lambert statement about putting dresses on QBs. That's because defensive lineman and linebackers used to nail QBs to the ground. It was a badge of honor if you could put a QB out of the game.
That's why you see QB passing percentages continue to rise. They aren't playing in the same game as the QBs of the 70's played in. It is simply not an even comparison.
And let's not forget how receivers could be mugged going down the field back then. You would have to literally slam one to the ground before you'd get a PI call. That alone, dramatically cut down on completion percentage. Now, you can't even look at the receiver wrong and the sky is filled with yellow.

I will confidently proclaim him the greatest playmaker of all time. Hes a dynamic runner. He impacts the running game in a huge way. On top of it hes made himself an elite passer in the league as well. It doesnt matter much to me where someone wants to rank him as an inside the box QB. You certainly respect the guys before him and their accomplishments. For example, Mahomes will almost surely go down as the better all time QB. He will win more rings. Thats fine. Mahomes for his greatness isnt changing the game. He isnt unique. He isnt cant miss like Lamar. That will be Lamar's lasting legacy regardless if he wins 0 rings or 3.
Saying Mahomes isn't unique is crazy. The dude makes ridiculous plays that you only see him make all the time. The TD pass to Kelce as he's falling forward with no leaverage to throw with, and still throwing a laser by a defender is something only him and Josh Allen can do. Even Lamar can't get that kind of velocity on a pass falling forward with his feet off the ground.
I agree Lamar may be more unique in his talents. He's Gale Sayers mixed with Aaron Rodgers. When Lamar is locked in, and playing his A game, no one can stop him. Literally no one. You beat Lamar by getting him flustered, and making him feel pressure. You get him playing his C game or worst, and he's very beatable. But if he's locked in, you basically have to outscore him to win.
And if we're being unbiased, Josh Allen is the same. He's the more athletic version of John Elway. When he's locked in, he's unstoppable. He'll be running to the sideline, and it looks like he's just tossing it away, then all of a sudden the ball is 50 yards downfield onto his WR's hands. He has little wiggle, and he's a large human being. You have to get him off his game and playing erratic, much like Lamar.
I know the league has had some phenomenal QB play in the past. But I've never seen it so abundant across the league. Mahomes, Lamar, Allen, Burrow and even the next tier of guys are great QBs. Stroud, Herbert, Stafford, Love and Daniels (who could very easily move up to the elite category the way he's played as a rookie). I think some of that can be attributed to the rule changes in modern football. Basically not being able to touch the WR or the QB without a flag has made it a lot easier. A lot of these mobile QB's wouldn't last with the earlier era of rules. Steve Atwater would have concussed pretty much every modern day QB with impunity. Makes you a little more hesitant to start running around in circles like Mahomes and Allen do at times.

Lamar really helped paved the way for guys like Murray, Hurts, Fields, Daniels, Williams, etc.
Edit - I guess you could consider Russell Wilson the prequel to Lamar. Very good passer / rusher - especially early in his career.

Nah. Mahomes is great. Hes not transcendent. There is a Lamar Jackson Experience. Something we have never seen before and likely wont see again in our lifetime. If Im bringing someone from the 1920s to the future to watch one game its a Lamar Jackson game.
He's already in GOAT conversations. He's got 3 rings already. He's been to something crazy like 7 straight AFC championships. He's been in 4 of the last 5 superbowls. He's won 3 superbowl MVP's. And he's not even 30 yet. Saying he isnt transcendent is crazy talk. He may not be the unicorn that Lamar is. But like Mackus said, he's still a unicorn. His arm is as good as it gets. He's accuracy. His presnap ability. And on top of it all, he's the best improviser I've ever seen at the QB position. He makes decisions that are insane, and consistently makes them work somehow.
We can talk about Lamar's greatness without trying to diminish other QB's. I hate Josh Allen. I think he's a crybaby bitch. But the dude is elite. I respect the talent. Same with Mahomes. Not a big fan, but the dude is still the best QB in the NFL, and already one of the best ever.

Mahomes is definitely already in the goat conversation. It will always be a debatable list of elite qb's from different eras with varying accomplishments and impacts on the game. Mahomes' unique playing style and years of dominance put him in the conversation.

Everything Mahomes is doing Rodgers did in his prime as far as skills and style. Obviously, Rodgers didnt win 3+ SBs so he Mahomes will go down as the better QB. He can be in the GOAT conversation. He deserves all his flowers he gets and will get in the future. THis isnt about being the GOAT. Hes just a different and arguably better version of those before him. Mahomes is seeing things in 2D. Lamar is 3D

Lamar paved the way for the league to be more open to mobile QBs. Vick was the first true modern dual threat QB, but he didn't transform the sport.

I think Randall Cunningham was the first, until he tore his ACL but that’s splitting hairs.
