If you can't believe that someone like Shohei Ohtani exists, I agree.

If you can't believe that Shohei Ohtani is worth such a commitment, I disagree. Teams are lining up to have the right to pay him such a contract.

For a team like the Dodgers that's already good and money doesn't matter, sure.  But for a team to sink at least 25% (for the Orioles like 75%) of their payroll on one player seems super risky, at least if the goal is contending.  Angels had Ohtani and Trout and yet never even made the playoffs.

If a team is more concerned with putting people in the seats, it might make sense.

Only 3 actually

Ohtani is def not worth what he will get. He wont be an effective pitcher for long if at all anymore and who knows when the bat starts to fade. Will go down as a really bad contract. Book it

Technically they have no 5th starter, so any warm body is an "upgrade."

They have options for the 5th spot, the goal is to add to  the TOR and move everyone down a spot.  Wells,Hall and Irvin can be considered 5th starters.

O's and Kimbrel "close to deal" according to Ken Rosenthal.

If you knew you were getting the past 3 years of Ohtani he’s worth whatever he wants. I’m sure the bat will remain good for a while, but I have no idea how long he’ll be a good pitcher. How much is the best DH in the game worth?

People are getting bitter at Ohtani lol.

The writers do not seem happy with his seemingly clandestine approach to FA.

There is baseball, and occasionally there are other things of note

"Now OPS sucks.  Got it."

"Making his own olive brine is peak Mackus."

"I'm too hungover to watch a loss." - McNulty

His homer rate ballooned a bit this year - I could see that coming down in Baltimore. Could be a pretty solid add.

I have been afraid this was the guy we were going to end up with.  IMO he has been in decline for the last couple of years.  This like everything the Orioles do is a price signing, if it happens.

Yankees traded for Alex Verdugo.  Red Sox took back not a whole lot.  Headliner is a SP who is now ranked #10 in the Boston system by MLB.com.  Other pieces are a 28 y/o RP with a 4.60 ERA in 30 career innings and a SP who was a recent 8th round pick that signed for slot and didn't make a pro debut.

Hays is similar offensively to Verdugo but has 2 years of control remaining.  I've been assuming we wouldn't be dealing him for prospects if we made a move, but I'd need more than twice as much as the Red Sox got in order to move Hays.

Yankees close to acquiring Soto? Would love to see them give up a huge package for a potential one-year rental.

Thorpe is their #5 prospect and #99 overall according to MLB.

King is a stud RP, though he hasn't been a closer, and even pitched well as a SP late last season.

Will be interesting to see who else is in the trade, but I'd imagine the other pieces are less valuable.

The Yankees outfield defense will end up being pretty atrocious with Soto, Judge and Verdugo, but Soto and Judge back-to-back will be pretty impossible to pitch to.

What do they do with Stanton? Still under contract for 2024-2027 for about $118 million.

Assuming they could sign Soto to an extension - that's a ton of money for Judge, Soto, Cole, Rodon, and Stanton.

The streak is over: the Orioles do not select anyone in the Rule 5 draft

I'm OK with trying to find talent through the Rule 5, but with only 26 roster spots and trying to be a legitimate contender - there's only so many places to hide a player.

Of course, that didn't stop the Orioles through the DD and Showalter era.

So what's your point? Clearly they'd be the favorite in the division would they not?

Not a bad deal for the Yankees when you consider the No. 1 piece was a relief pitcher. The Yankees haven't been much of a sign-and-develop franchise to begin with, at least not under Cashman.

Aside from Soto, the Yankees finished out of the postseason with those aforementioned players.

And the Padres did worse with a full season of Soto.

I think it doesn't speak very highly about Soto when he's been traded three times before his rookie deal is over, and he's a transcendent bat. Something is wrong there, but I don't know what it is.
