Exactly
A bookie let a Japanese interpreter rack up some $4.5 million in gambling debts before calling it in? That's an awfully generous line of credit.

Isn't ignorance of the law a non-starter for criminal defense? Also, like 2035 stated, it's tough for me to believe that Ohtani's financial team would let millions slip out of his account. I guess it's possible that Ohtani has surrounded himself with incompetent and enabling people. I think it's also possible that Ohtani and his interpreter were betting with the bookie together. ( His interpreter was supposedly his best friend.) Lastly, another plausible reason for betting with a bookie would be to bet on baseball with him. There would be a record of what the bets were placed on if the baseball bets were placed legally in Vegas.
Right. And why go with a bookie? Because doing it legally through FanDuel, DraftKings, a licensed casino, etc (if outside CA) would have set off all sorts of alarms when they saw the account was Ohtani's. I don't know anything more than what's been made public, but I am 100% certain that the interpreter is flat out lying when he says he believed he was placing those bets legally.

Bookie with a heart of gold.
Kind of makes you wonder why so much of Ohtani's contract with the Dodgers was deferred, doesn't it?

Yeah, that’s pretty much what I was saying and we’re in agreement. With all the legal avenues available for sports betting these days (though not in CA, but Ohtani and his interpreter obviously travel together a lot to where it could be done legally) the only reason to go with a bookie is if you have something to hide. The explanation given reeks and there has to be plenty more to this story. Just wonder how much will see the light of day.

We trust DL Hall as a slight underdog in Queens today? Should we have a separate “betting on baseball” thread and dedicate it to Ohtani?

It’s not that I’m rooting against Hall or anything, but I wasn’t sad to lose him. It’s just one game, and at the same time, the good (2 ER) can be linked to it being against a team likely to lose 100+ games. He was pretty bad today. Just 4 IP, 8 baserunners, just 1 K. The guy isn’t a big league starter, I’ll stick by that. Again, not rooting against him - but glad to have gotten the value we did for him.
Yeah, hes a BP guy. Looks like Ortiz wont get reg PT to start the year either.
