If Shohei Otani is posted, I have zero expectation of the O's being involved.

Getting past that, if he was.... what would you suggest the O's offer contract wise in addition to the posting?

Zero issue with giving him every dollar Tanaka got.

Can see this already...  I'm going to fully talk myself into the reasons why the O's should be after Otani, and how they could make it work (going with Sisco as the starter at C for example).... and the O's will have made no attempt, and seem surprised at the final dollars when he signs with one of the usual suspects.

They will leak interest in the rumor mill and then disappear.

It is what they do.

With players like this? They don't leak interest.

Sure they do.  We have seen it before...Tanaka for one.  They let the world know they have scouted the player and then when the bids come in they are not there.

How awesome is it for him to be that good of a 2 way player?

I know Japan isn't MLB... but it is like AAAA, and he's an impact player on the mound and at the plate. That's wild.

I don't think the Os were ever interested in Tanaka.

Shohei Otani got 253 out of 254 first-place MVP votes. The 254th dentist voted for a reliever:

Give him all the monies. Even if he's not as good in translation as he appears, just the fact people have to adjust to him will make him stellar for the first 2 years. Gotta add legit rotation talent somehow.

From Jeff Passan:

Potentially huge news from Sponichi: Nippon Ham is set to post Shohei Otani after this season.

The question, if Nippon Ham posts Otani, is whether MLB/MLBPA will adjust the new international signing rules to accommodate for him coming.

Sources told Yahoo Sports this week that there are potential ways around the limit on spending for under-25 players like Shohei Otani.

Just to clarify: Sponichi story says Shohei Otani would be posted following the 2017 season, not right now. Will play in Japan next season.

I think we'll get further clarification on this once people can dig into the actual wording of the new CBA.  But I'd be absolutely shocked if the new international limits of $5M apply to posted players from Asia.  First off, I don't think MLB can simply change the agreement with NPB (or the separate agreement with KBO) without  their input and the CBA deal was between the players and owners, not a renegotiation with NPB.  Secondly, the players that get posted are, by any definition, not free agents.  They are still under contract with their Japanese team.  It's more like a trade (for cash) with a window for re-negotiation of the player's deal except the player can negotiate with multiple teams.

Will be interested to see how what exactly ends up being the case here, but my guess is that nothing will change for players that are signed to NPB or KBO deals.
