Dodgers signed catcher Will Smith to a 10-year, $140M extension. No opt outs and $50M in deferred money.
Most notable here, is that Smith is a Boras client and had two years of control remaining ('24 & '25). So one of the rare examples of a Boras guy locking up. Smith is 29 this season.
The extreme length of the deal is an obvious sign of trying to reduce the luxury tax number. Between that, front-loading, and the deferrals (which make the deal worth $12.2M per year NPV), it's not as easy as saying Smith is signing a $14M/year deal. He was already due to be paid $8.5M in his second arbitration year and making $5M in his first, so he'd have gotten close to $12M or so next season through arbitration and then more as a FA. The last few seasons of this deal have to be considered likely release points, so it's probably more in line with paying Smith $20M a year for the next 7 seasons than $14M for the next 10.
I don't think this is a great model for any of the O's young guys, but it is very encouraging to see a recent example of a arbitration age Boras client extending. I still have little hope for an extension with Rutschman, Henderson or Holliday, but maybe not quite as impossible as I've felt to date.

Dammit. Not sure where I misread. Much less topical, then.

Still think it is (not the Boras angle)...Smith would be a 31 year old catcher hitting the Market. You look around and you see what the Dodgers are doing and you decide the the Championship opportunity, where you have a home, the things around you are more important than chasing an extra dollar somewhere else.
When I say "understand how you want to win" and finding the guys that 1) can help you and 2) want to be part of it and you do that by signing contracts. Will Smith said, "let's go" and they figured it out. Good for both of them. There's a zero percent chance (rounding) he regrets this choice. He has a ton of money, in a place that shows a commitment to winning and he puts his money where his mouth is.
Orioles aren't the Dodgers in terms of resourcing (nobody is like the Dodgers), but the application is the same. Find the guys that want to be part of what you're doing and both sides can benefit.

You can make anybody want to be part of what you're doing provided you don't run out of money.

No (and that's my point). This is a ridiculous thread to have an actual discussion so there's other places to do this or make one.

Can always transition but def positive in regards to Bradish. Thought it was very possible and still may be that he isnt back before June
Means and, more meaningfully, Bradish both moved to the 15 day IL and not the 60 day. Gives some insight into their expectation for when they'll be back.

Can we envision any sort of scenario where the Os trade for Trout?
I'd rather trade for Luzardo.

From what I've read, he refuses to leave the Angels. They've been trying to trade him for the past 2 seasons, but he won't sign off on it. He wants to win it all with the Angels.
In a way, you have to admire the dedication. On the other hand, what a waste of a generational talent.

The forecast for the next series and for us locals looks brutal.
Good Lord I just checked and you ain’t lying.
I was gonna see about going tomorrow or Tuesday. Pass on that.
Wonder if they will even get a single game in.
