Hopefully I did this poll correctly lol
Poll: what is your offseason grade so far

I think grades are important to the context of the class you are taking. If you don't define the expectation of the class, then everyone is grading on different criteria.
I don't excuse losing, so I'd give every offseason recently an F because they've made no effort to compete. Intentionally so. Others would suggest I'm not being fair because "that's not where we're at". The class is hard, I don't think you should get credit for not trying.
Most people seem to have moved into the 'let's do things' since, well it's year 5 and the Orioles were surprisingly (not intentional from a FO perspective) better last year.
I didn't have expectations of them competing at the top of the market so my grade isn't based on what many consider the top 7-10 players. I do not ding them for not getting them, they were never going to get them....but I I think those unexpected additions would be needed to create an "A" offseason....so I don't think an A was ever really in play.
If I want to grade them, I should be able to describe what I would want them to do. What does a "B+" offseason look like.
Trade for Woodruff (needed to be in on this early)
Extend Woodruff (framework of Luis Castillo contract)
Sign Manaea (1-year LHer to get to Means)
Extend Means
Trade for McCann (the full context of this is to use his salary to improve 'later' too with Parada)
Sign or trade for a 1-year OFer to bridge to Cowser (use Stowers as trade)
Extend Adley
Extend Mullins
Extend Hays (please let's not make this the only thing people want to discuss)
All of those things were pretty reasonably accomplished and would build a good 3+ year window to market and compete.
My grade in the poll is a D.

Two key points.
First, the poll is worded correctly. They key being "so far." Grades can change throughout the school year both up and down. This is the grade today.
Second, I view this like real life. You don't get credit in school for studying hard. You get credit or lack thereof for the results. I am grading the FO on the results. I don't give a rats azz how hard they tried to make a deal with one or more FAs. Its the results that matter. And yes you could say the results are "good" because they didn't over pay for someone or trade away the future. But that would all be supposition. There were deals made that I believe the O's could have reasonably exceeded without overpaying too much or mortgaging the future.
So D.

I cant give an F, an F means you did absolutely nothing.
So I dont think anybody can argue and prove they did nothing.
So then, its all subjected to the opinion on the quality of their moves from D to A.

That's not what an F means.
Depending on a school's grading scale, an F shows your cumulative score was below a 70% or below a 60% or whatever the number may be. If you get a 55%, you did stuff, just not enough or well enough to pass. A 0% is doing absolutely nothing.

I think there are moves that absolutely could be graded as an F. Way over spending or trading away the future could be F moves IMO.

Or spending 8 million on a 2nd baseman to start over Urias and Westburg even though he has been bad over his last 800+ plate appearances.
Oh wait, my bad, they also have the option of playing him in left or right field where the O's could really use an 80 something OPS+ bat.

OK, so the F takes the place of the E in this case and at my school for instance.

I won’t submit a final grade just now. Suffice to say the body of work so far ranges from mediocre to subpar to makes-no-sense. I’ll say this, if they eventually pull off a passing grade, it certainly won’t have been done within the structure of the syllabus. This one’s gonna require some adderall and a 12-pack of Red Bull to get through the 48-hour cram session before the final.

Should change the poll so we can see votes.
Agree with Steve above. If we ask for the grade today, it's the grade today. My grade isn't intended to be irrationally negative, it's a current assessment. Do better things, get a better grade.
Fast moving winter is limiting to what can happen at this point, but there's certainly things that could probably happen.

I didn't know that was an option lol

Huge fan of the Front Office.
Believe the Orioles can be a playoff team in 23.
The opportunity to supplement what they have was available to them. For whatever reason - MASN, Family, lack of desire - they've played on the fringes.
Gave them an F. Grade could rebound some if they obtain a front end starter by giving up some of their depth, but I'll be annoyed if they have to do that vs just having signed a FA.
Working extensions for Henderson, Rodriguez, and Adley would also help the grade.

They got rid of/replaced them with:
-Lopez / Givens
-Chirinos / McCann
-Lyles / Gibson
-Odor / Frazier
That’s doing nothing. Each and every one of these guys will need to out perform last season to be upgrades. They’ve done nothing. Disagree with Weber’s take on each individual move possibly coming out to a C. They all have to be better than last year, and none of them are young. Stupid ass lazy non-competitive off-season. Complete fail. McCann is the only one I have some confidence in there being an upgrade.

Oh as I said, I don't think each individual move averages out to a C. My point was that even if one feels that way, they're ignoring everything the franchise has failed to do.

They pretty much did nothing. Not one move they made actually improves the team in any meaningful way. That's an F for me

I'd love to see a justification for a C.
