No complaints. Likely a marginal upgrade over Chirinos. The real upgrade is that he won’t be the starter for the first 25% of the season like Chirinos was.

I saw where McCann said the O's planned on him playing about 80 games. I'm not sure how the math works out there, unless he was talking about both years.

unless they have another guy on the roster that can fill in at catcher, and allows Adley to DH/1B.

Zero chance McCann plays 80 games in 2023 unless Rutschman misses at least a month with an injury.
Chirinos played in 39 games (38 starts) after Rutschman arrived in game #41. So that's a pace of 52 games. Even if you DH/1B Rutschman and catch McCann more frequently than they did with Chirinos, I can't imagine it reaching anywhere near 80 games.

Wouldn’t surprise me. Anything to keep the win total in check this year to ensure we stay on a small upward arc instead of actually going for it and starting the expectations engine up. This is a single faceted, non-competitive minded front office. Crystal clear to me now.

Note from Roch initial entry on McCann, worth highlighting here.
"[McCann] was named the Mets’ 2022 nominee for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award, which recognizes a player from each club who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, sportsmanship, community involvement, philanthropy, and positive contributions, both on and off the field."

Yeah, that's where I'm at. He'll probably start 40-45 games at catcher, so that means he'd need to play like 35-40 games at 1B/DH. He'll play there some, but I'd expect more like 10-15 games, unless he hits like he did in 2019-20.
I don't think adding a third catcher would increase his playing time.

The warm and fuzzies. We probably had a lot of those guys from 2018-2021.

Sure beats the alternative and those guys that are shown on TMZ, beating their wives, and other stupid things.

I can't imagine him getting many games at DH/1B. Between Mountcastle, Santander, and Adley (and others) don't see why you'd ever put McCann in there much.

The Mets will reportedly be responsible for $19 million of the $24 million still owed McCann. Don't think that's going to get them below the luxury tax.

I will continue to contend this is the best move the Orioles could have made for a catching compliment to Adley Rutschman.
Roch highlights in entry yesterday.
If I'm checking boxes, I check them all. If the OPS line is .750, I'll take the over.

.643 and .538 the past two years.
And I'm fine with him at the backup C.

An OPS over .750? Bold prediction for a guy who has only done it twice in his career? And one of those was the Covid shortened 2020 season.
.643 and .538 the past two years.
Actually I don't think it's a bold prediction. His career OPS vs LHers is .777 and I think he winds up with basically 90+% of his PAs against them.
Love the interview (watch the 12+minutes on MASN), again, I think this is a big move for a bunch of real reasons. He'll be 33 this year, 34 as part of the current contract. Extend him now for 2 more years. Settle in (again, not in a complacency way). Defend, Rake, Lead.
