The Orioles (astoundingly) have too many MLB ready/viable pieces that deserve playing time. If they don't make a trade for a VERY substantial upgrade at SP, I'm going to be very disappointed.
Prepare to be disappointed.

Declining his option will either be great news in that it means they're extremely confident that they'll bring in guys that are better than him or terrible news in that it means that they are so worried about paying a guy a couple million more than he's worth that they'll release him without any plan for replacement.
The decision doesn't doom them to any one path, but my skepticism about their actual intent to improve the team will be heightened if they decline the option.
It should make you feel confident that they think they can and will do better than Lyles. I agree with you that we need 2 SPs but even if they only go get 1 this tells me they will do better than Lyles

One conservative but realistic possibility for this offseason
Trade for Pablo Lopez
Sign Tyler Anderson 2/30 mil
Sign Joc Pederson 2/18
Sign Omar Navaro or Christian Vazquez 2/16
Thats adding 37 or 38 mil mil to the current roster. Im using the predicted contracts over at fangraphs. I think we could do more add 1 more FA(Segura). Sign a higher profile FA but IM keeping it pretty conservative here. There is no reason why we shouldnt at least do this.
Mullins CF
Rutschman C
Santander RF
Henderson3b
Mountcastle 1b
Pederson DH
Urias 2b
Stowers LF
Mateo SS
Vazquez, Hays, Vavra or Westburg, McKenna.
Pederson sits vs lefties and Hays plays. If it is Vazquez over Navarro then when Vazquez catches Adley can DH and Hays could platoon with Stowers instead of Pederson.
Rotation:
Lopez
Anderson
Kremer
Bradish
5th is competition

The rumor, although never substantiated that I’m aware of, was Mullins would be the but dealt for Pablo.
I’d love to get Pablo, big fan, but still not sure how I’d feel about that.
We can make it happen without Mullins. We would have too IMO. Maybe Santander would be part of the deal but in shocking news Id strongly prefer to keep AS. The power is legit and I like that he is a switch hitter. You certainly can replace him but Id prefer to keep him.

I'm not fatalist or even pessimistic yet, but declining the option definitely doesn't make me feel more confident that they are going to spend. I've seen them disappoint us too often for that, they get no benefit of the doubt until they start actually acting towards improving. I think I said it elsewhere, but I don't think that this decision doesn't necessarily means something negative about their intentions. They could very well be planning on making an upgrade and are confident enough in that possibility that they aren't even going to carry Lyles as hot backup in case the plan goes awry.
They better do better than Lyles, is all. Certainly no good excuses for not doing so. And I still think they need two vet arms, if one is a cheaper clone of Lyles, that's fine.

Si thinks it Correa
Age: 28 | Former Team: Twins | Prediction: OriolesCorrea is back on the market after one year and $35.1 million earned in Minnesota. He was once again an all-around force at the plate and received plaudits from Twins teammates for his leadership skills amid the club’s bounce back to playoff contention (or its attempt at such, even if it ultimately collapsed in September). He’s at No. 3 after topping our list last year because of a fairly drastic drop-off on defense—one that could indicate his eventual move to third base will come sooner than expected and sap some of his value.

No qualifying offer for Taijuan Walker. Interesting FA SP option. Wouldn't like him as the best guy we bring in but if he's the 2nd guy that would start shaping up as a nice rotation.

I didn't watch any Twins games. But if his D is slipping, he isn't the best choice (of the FA options). The O's are set at 3B. With that said, he'd still be a good bridge to Holliday. And they could always trade him if someone shows up early from the minors.
Good news! I saw a dog today.

They also 'predict' the Orioles will sign Stripling and Wacha.
Seems like a shocking lack of analysis across that entire list. The predictions have kind of a backwards looking feel (like 'what I just did') and then zero analysis for why that team would be signing them.

I beat that drum 2 years ago. I think he would be more expensive than they want to spend, but he is a good pitcher.

I'm fairly sure if they spend enough to get him, he'll end up being their top addition (as far as SP goes). His name stood out to me a couple weeks ago when I was looking over a list of potential FAs. I can see it happening.

At some point if they're serious about winning, they have to do what they have to do.
Let's hope they have reached that point. I will believe it when I see it, and I am cautiously optimistic.
I am waiting but if they, do meaningful things, I will buy some game plan.
