I feel like there were a lot of teams who found solid production at QB in the transfer portal ths year (Bo Nix/Oregon, Michael Penix/Washington off the top of my head) where I'd like to think Maryland could replace Taulia externally and hopefully not fall off very much

Let’s not forget, Taulia himself was a portal gift. QBs are the most plentiful position in the portal. The toughest to find, at least good ones? O-linemen.

True but I was thinking more starter at school A going to school B where you can bring in someone who's already started for multiple years elsewhere

I know the Terps don’t play them as often, but Nebraska hiring Matt Rhule and Wisconsin hiring Luke Fickell have made the bar for MD to clear even higher.

We’ll see about that. That’s what everyone was saying when Nebraska hired Scott Frost.

Rhule was 0-11 against ranked teams at Baylor. I’ll have to see a lot more in order to see them as a threat.

As bad as Frost was....https://www.sports-r...3-maryland.html

So I guess Rhule would have to be a pretty huge downgrade.

Because a head to head in 2019, with the Terps dealing with all kinds of adversity and a roster nothing like what it is now is how this kind of thing gets defined? Nebraska stinks. I do like Rhule, so you may be right. But that link does nothing for me bud, lol.

Well, since we're dismissing the guy for not beating any ranked teams after taking over following the Art Briles disaster at Baylor (though he did go 11-1 in year 3) I figure it's all the same.

Jeff Sims just announced he's leaving GT for the portal, so if Taulia leaves?

I think Rhule could have success. I'm sure Fickell will have success.

Im not concerned with either at all.

For the most part right now, MD has to only focus on MD. If there is a program to be concerned with, imo it's Penn State.

Ohio State and Michigan are currently another stratosphere.

Penn State is the 3rd best team in the division. Consistently Top 20. Recruits well in your backyard.

MD over the next 2-3 years needs to close the gap there.

Goals of a Top 3 finish in the division and Top 25 appearance possible...but how MD plays against PSU going forward will be really telling.

Totally agree. Close the gap with Penn State. Problem is showing a recruit a game in Happy Valley vs one with 12 people at Byrd is a tough sell.

Need to emphasize closeness to home and playing time I guess. NIL couldn’t hurt. Boosters should step up. How are our boosters pockets vs Penn State?

Probably best to stick with that playing time thing you mentioned.

I'd imagine Penn State has way more NIL money to throw around.

Also, if you're a highly touted recruit, would you rather play in front of the home crowd at Beaver Stadium or Byrd Stadium?

Well as a non football player I can tell you I had no interest in going to school in the middle of nowhere.

That said, if I could do it again, I’d have applied to pretty much every SEC school except Vandy (who would have told me to kick rocks lol)

I didn't go to Maryland, but I assigned to work the area (upper PG County) out of the academy. Is the area a huge draw to kids? Riverdale, Hyattsville, Beltsville, Langley Park, Takoma Park, etc doesn't seem to be quite the happening spots for college kids.

College Park is in the heart of one of the most populated areas in the country.

For me — and again I’m not a football player — that’s a selling point versus spending 3 years in the middle of the mountains in central PA.
