Early thoughts on Demus?

It was a terrible injury, and it makes sense that he just isn’t quite 100% back or may take time to find that crispness again. But just curious what you guys think.

I haven't paid attention to how many plays Demus has been on the field for, but perhaps they're not giving him too big a role early on since he just got back. I imagine part of why his numbers seem down is also because they have a bunch of good receivers, so the ball is getting spread around more. They're also putting more emphasis, and having success, on running the ball so far. That bad drop Saturday had nothing to do with his knee, and is something that has frequently been an issue for him.

I think we'll learn more about what sort of shape he's in with the conference schedule coming. They'll likely need him to be something close to the guy he was before the injury.

There were questions about whether he'd even be back before November, so it's completely understandable that he's not having the type of start he had last season. It's also likely still taking him time to get used to playing with a knee brace. As Mike said they're also using a much heavier rotation at WR, going 5-deep at the position.

Like basketball, the Terp football program now has its own NIL collective.

This latest heartbreaking loss hurts more than the Michigan game, as they are a better team than we are.  However, EVERY time I start to think we're on the verge of a Top 25 ranking, we blow a game.  It's just a game... I know.

Now that they have 6 wins, we can officially look at bowl projections without worrying about them missing the postseason

For example, CBS has them going to the Music City Bowl and facing Kentucky https://www.cbssport...ls/predictions/

If they lose the last two, they should be on the sidelines.

Well they’re not losing to Rutgers and even if they ended up 6-6 there are too many bowls as is

Wisconsin was annoying, but whatever, weather.  Didn't necessarily expect a win, but wanted a better performance.
Penn State was just disheartening.  Too much offensive talent to be shutout and completely overwhelmed.

Ohio State is coming off a bye, and a bad performance for them vs. NW (they did have numerous players out).
Have to think they'll be motivated to give a beating.

Have to beat Rutgers.  Stay in the bowl cycle.  Beat Rutgers, win the bowl.... that's 8 wins after 7 last year.
That's something.

Game that really annoys me is Purdue. It was a near coin-flip game with MD being the slight favorite at home, but I felt during that game that MD should have won.

Ohio State played Indiana Saturday. Though since the score was 56-14, it probably felt like a bye for them.

We came into this year saying that Maryland needed to compete better against the conference's blue blood programs. They did that against Michigan, and beat Michigan State (albeit in a down year for the Spartans). But the last two games against Wisconsin and Penn State have trended the opposite direction. Sure, there was bad weather in Madison, and Taulia Tagovailoa clearly isn't 100% healthy (for the record, neither is Billy Edwards, Jr.), but these were games you hoped to compete better in.

If they come out swinging against Ohio State and stay competitive, you likely end up feeling better about the program's future. But the odds of that happening are obviously slim to none given the talent on the Buckeyes' roster. So you're likely looking at a 7-8 win season where you left a lot on the table.

We've also talked about the next year or two being time to "re-tool" with the amount of talent expected to depart after this season, but the rumors I'm hearing about Tagovailoa, Spencer Anderson, and Jeshaun Jones all leaning towards coming back may allow for 2023 to be more competitive than originally expected.

No steps back.

7 wins and a bowl last year.

7-8 wins and a bowl this year.

That has to be the minimum expectation for next year regardless of who leaves imo.

Assuming the regular season plays out as expected, and even if they pick up a bowl win to get to eight, it's hard to see this season overall as a sign of progress.

The added win came more as a result of Michigan State being bad instead of the Top 10 team they finished as last season. The only result that felt like a step forward was a 7-point loss back in September. Since then it has been the same thing every week, mistake-prone and sometimes just flat-out listless showings.

Maybe 7-8 wins is their ceiling most years. I think it depends on the schedule and the overall quality of the conference. Some years that would certainly be considered a success. This season it feels like they were capable of more and left opportunities on the field.
