I think he'd have even less interest in Maryland than Indiana with no personal connection to the area but might as well pick up the phone

Am I an oddball for not feeling any particular urge to come back to Baltimore or the DMV area despite having grown up there and following Baltimore sports teams? Like is that really a draw for people? I know Gary said it was for him but like the idea that Enfield would automatically be interested because he went to school around here, or that Stevens wouldn't because he didn't even accept Indiana's offer, is kind of weird to me.

Best case, Stevens wanted to give the front office thing a shot and found that he misses coaching, and a Big Ten program opening up provides him that opportunity.

Worst case, he says thanks for checking in, and you move on to the next guy.

Of course it's a draw for people.  Different people have different priorities, but proximity to family, returning to an area you know you like living, and nostalgia are all very powerful reasons that many people take jobs and move places in all walks of life not just sports.  Sports probably has it moreso than others because the history and nostalgia bomb expands beyond just your personal circle and into the actual employment aspect of it.

The opposite can also be true.  Some people need to get away from family.  Or perhaps they know they didn't like living in the area for whatever reason.

Since we're throwing out home run hires, how about Porter Moser of Oklahoma (formerly Loyola Chicago)? Love that guy, he's intense, reminds me of Gary, lite, in that respect.

It's early so I think we can throw out whoever we want. 😁

I honestly believe that the coach of any program outside the top 15 or so would seriously consider this job. The question is really whether we can close the deal.

That said I think the guys with absurd buyouts like Nate Oats aren't leaving.

Im a bit leery of home grown.

Yes, Gary was local and Im a huge Gary fan.

We also had Wade here, nice guy, but not NCAA college head coach material.

The athletic department just announced a seven-figure partnership with the sportsbook PointsBet, so they’ll have some more money to play with here.

Interesting. How will this work? Is it a partnership to have the sportsbook in the arena and Maryland Stadium?

No, it’ll just be signage and gambling education materials with a future philanthropic component that’s currently TBD.

It's amusing how quickly we moved away from "OMG, we can't have a pro team in Vegas, there's gambling there!!" I think that feeling still existed just 5 years ago.

Just needed to open the flood gates on sports betting which was such a long time coming.

And now we're close to a third pro team heading there in the A's.

"Wait, we can make sponsorship money off this?!? You know, maybe gambling isn't such a bad thing after all!"

I know we have to pay Turgeon's buyout, but the last publicly available financial report I saw had the terps in the black by like 6 million. So I don't think we have serious financial issues like we did in 2011. We can't compete with Texas or Alabama financially (yet) but we are by no means poor.

Agreed, but they need to start spending the money wisely, starting with this hire.

Neat little Kevin Willard/Seton Hall fact I found: in 2019-2020, Seton Hall had two wins against the top ten in true road games and was one of only three schools to do that

That's a cool query, I like it. What site is that? It looks like baseball-reference? I had no idea they had one for College BB, what a noob.

Didn't the Terps do that last year?  Wisconsin and Illinois?  Fair to discount it quite a bit because there weren't any fans, totally different animal.
