He will flame out as he hits 30. At least on one side. Likely pitching.

Why's that?

Baseball again did its glorious thing where you get to see something you've never seen before.  The Nationals defense allowed a run to score because they only recorded 3 outs, and not 4.

My head is spinning a little after reading that.

Nats leaving the field is what triggered the insanity.  If they stay on the field, they appeal that the runner from 3rd left early (he did), and then that runner is instead ruled out (becoming the 4th out).  But because they left the diamond, they then aren't allowed to appeal.  But there was no reason to stay on the diamond, because the umps had called the 3rd out and hadn't signaled that the runner from third base counted as a run scored.

I think that's kind of a stupid distinction.  Should be allowed to appeal as long as its before the first pitch of the next inning.  But on the other hand, it gives us this fun circus.

Nothing will beat, and I don’t even remember the rule, but when Michael Morse homered, and something with the base runners, he had to go back to the batters box, pretending to swing with no bat, then start his home run trot again for it to actually count.

Joe Posnanski is simulating a 16-team tournament, with the teams made up of players all born in certain states.  Maryland is the #3 seed, despite pretty massive holes at 2B and C.

No. 3 Maryland vs. No. 14 Louisiana

State: Maryland
Seed: No. 3
Population: About 6.2 million
Hall of Famers: 9

There’s a specific reason that Maryland is seeded so high — and believe it or not, it’s NOT because Babe Ruth is on this team. Obviously, Ruth being from Baltimore — along with Baseball 100 stars Cal Ripken Jr., Jimmie Foxx and Al Kaline — makes this a formidable lineup. But depth is not a strong suit of this team; there are pretty significant holes at catcher and second base. Other teams seeded lower probably have more well-rounded lineups.

No, here’s the big thing: Lefty Grove is from Maryland. And Lefty Grove has a strong argument as the best pitcher ever. He did pitch in pre-integration, which makes it hard to compare him with later pitchers. But Grove dominated his time as much as any pitcher has. Nine ERA titles? He didn’t even know what FIP was and he still led the league in it eight times. He won the pitchers’ triple crown three out of four years between 1928 and 1931. He was pretty darned dominant in the World Series.

If not for Grove, this team is a lot less interesting to me … other pitchers like Vic Willis or Bobby Mathews do not inspire fear. I suppose, if not for Grove, I would have had Ruth do the Shohei thing as a pitcher and hitter. In fact, that’s a fun idea … but Grove, to me, makes this team a true threat for the title.

Also, notice that the great Judy Johnson from the Negro leagues plays third and leads off. Not many people know about Johnson, but he was a great one. His Hall of Fame plaque says he was a fantastic defensive player and a clutch hitter. He also got on base a lot and had some speed.

No. 3 seed: Maryland

  1. Judy Johnson, 3B*

  2. Al Kaline, CF*

  3. Babe Ruth, RF*

  4. Jimmie Foxx, 1B*

  5. Cal Ripken Jr., SS*

  6. Harold Baines, LF*

  7. Home Run Baker, DH*

  8. Cupid Childs, 2B

  9. Babe Phelps, C

Starting pitcher: Lefty Grove*

It is rather remarkable for a state like Maryland to have arguably the best position player ever and arguably the best pitcher ever.
