I think it's closer to the opposite, if he wasn't the main piece of the Machado trade he wouldn't get the grief that he gets.
Until this year he has been fine when healthy, but running out of chances due to being injured too much. This year just went off the rails.
I think this is a fair way of looking at it.

If he wasn’t the centerpiece of the Machado trade, would anyone care less if he were left off the 40-man?

Yeah... if he had the same exact profile. He's a guy that has some talent, still relatively young, who has struggled to stay healthy and just had an abysmal '21. You can't count on him at all to be anything. You now fully expect nothing. But he's been lauded as having talent by numerous evaluators, and has produced previously at the AA level at younger ages. You can leave him off the 40 if it comes to it, but you've got lots of other options to remove first.

I was mostly just curious if there is sentiment here to keep him primarily for the slim hope of salvaging something from the trade, aside from Kremer’s disastrous season. But if there are obviously better options to leave off the 40-man, then no biggie.

Thats 15-16 depending on Severino. Throw in a couple waiver claims and its easy to get to 40 even adding the prospects they want.
This probably deserves it's own thread (40-man roster decisions), so it's easier for you guys to do it ...
...but I'm not sure how I feel about using the umpire to stop the pitches. I mean, it would create some 40-man space but eventually the umps would probably start getting annoyed, at least until they call Adley up. Probably not that much different than when Severino was back there.
