Next year, between the majors and AAA assuming no trades, you're going to have Mullins, Hays, Santander...McKenna and maybe Stewart. Neustrom has performed alright at AAA. Stowers will likely move up. Watson is starting to look like a prospect, walk rate be damned. It's getting crowded and Diaz will need to earn time.

I suspect Santander will be traded, and none of the guys you mentioned are top prospects so there is a spot for Diaz.

Hopefully they find DJ Stewart a home somewhere else too..

I wouldn't be surprised if they non tendered or traded Santander but I suspect he'll be back. He's heating up a bit and his value can only get better. If he rebounds in '22 the Os will have options. They can trade him for good value or pencil him in the lineup for '23 if they think he's a nugget .

I agree, his value is probably at a low point and I think a lot of his problem has been health, which hopefully will be better next year. No reason to non tender him unless they are being super cheap (as you said, wouldn't be surprised). He has upside still.

As for Stewart, he will still be pre arb cheap so I'm sure they keep him around as a backup. I think he even has an option since he hasn't used one this year.

Mentioned it in the game thread but I think Stewart will be DFA. Need the 40 man spot.

That would make sense, I haven’t paid any attention to how many and who needs to be protected this winter.

I love that people still use nugget to note a valuable player.

Diaz seems like he's in no-man's land in the Organization.

I think Santander gets traded, but they can just as easily leave Stewart in the OF in 2022 to burn the year.  McKenna can be 4th OF.

You trade Diaz too.  Someone still believes.  That frees up 2 40-man spots and realigns some depth.

as makoman suggested, easy enough to have a AAA OF of Neustrom, Stowers and Watson and you have a bunch of OFers from the last 2 draft classes coming up behind them (Kjerstad, Haskin, Cowser, Trimble, Rhodes and Williams, plus other promotions)

Don't trade him at a low.

Just forget about him, and have him at AAA next year, and don't think about him further until he's done something there to earn your attention.

Yeah you don't trade him unless you really think he'll never amount to anything. He'll be 25 this winter. In 2020 Mateo was 25, a former top 50ish prospect and had had more success in AAA than Diaz. He was traded for Junior Perez, an 18 year old 20-30 team prospect with 35+ FV per fangraphs. Maybe you could basically get someone like Mishael Deson or Darrell Hernaiz for him.

I have to wonder if he stays on the 40 man roster.

He’s going to the Arizona Fall League so maybe a last ditch effort for him to prove he can stay on the 40.

I’ll eat my crow, I was wrong that he would make his major league debut but never saw this bad of a season coming.

It was a lost horrible year regardless of anything he does in the AFL.  You just forget about him until he does something to make you pay attention.

I do not think anyone thought he would be this awful.  I was always a little skeptical for 2 reasons.  I saw him in Frederick and Bowie after the trade and thought his swing was long, and he seemed a little mechanical in the outfield.  The big reason, is the Dodgers, never give away anything they see as a part of their future.  I never got the impression that it hurt for them to include him in the trade.

Good question. I have to assume there aren't enough others to kick him off, there's usually enough questionable at the bottom of the roster, but I haven't really looked closely at all that.

If it's, say, a choice between him and DJ Stewart keep Diaz. If it's Diaz or Travis Lakins or Adam Plutko keep Diaz. Those are easy choices. Guys like Adam Hall or Lamar Sparks seem like they aren't close to MLB ready so may not need protecting. Robert Neustrom would probably get taken. Like Bob said maybe Diaz can show something in the AFL.

The 40-man roster spot means you can't just forget about him and see if he ever does something to make you notice.  Gonna have to decide whether he keeps a spot and you possibly lose someone else you might care about or do we outright him and see if anyone else plucks him or takes him in the Rule 5.

Diaz  has played so poorly that even if we lose him it's not really grounds for criticism.  Guess it'll depend on who else they keep.  I'd try to give him one more shot, but can't say it'll necessarily be a bad move to expose him.
