Yes OBC, that is a factor. But in a county league that tons of folks believe is down and not good some still believe Howard should run through it. But their youth is probably playing a bigger part.

That’s tough you need seniors to lead. But in a few years then they should be dynamite

I 2nd what has mostly been said. Howard is down and their youth is showing. The defense is the biggest difference. Not the same dominant unit we are use to seeing. New schemes and inexperience is a factor. Plus losing all county Lb Stephanos before the year started is really hurting right now.

I think the Offense is still pretty good with a top notch RB and upper tier QB and WR. Oline needs to continue improving.

Howard honestly still should win out. Maybe not in easy fashion but wins and wins and that’s all that really matters.

I agree that the LB play is hurting Howard right now. Not only were Howard depending on Stephanos, but they also lost RJ Fitzgerald, a part-time starter.

But I can't buy the inexperience being a factor. The past few years Howard has lost at least 25 players per class.  Its not like their JV program is average, only losing 5 games total in the last 4 years.  They have the talent no question.

Week 5

Hammond (0-4) at Reservoir (1-3)  Although Reservoir is usually a difficult team to figure out, I don't believe they can lose to this year's Hammond team, who has only scored 3 TDs in 4 games.  Still like the growth of Hammond, just no quite ready to really compete yet. Reservoir by 4 scores.

Glenelg (4-0) at Atholton (2-2) - Although they have a pretty decent RB, I don't believe Atholton has enough scoring fire power to keep up with Glenelg, who averages 40 points a game. SR RB Wande Owens will have another huge day.  He's clearly the favorite at this point to win HoCo OPOY. Glenelg by 5 scores

Mt. Hebron (0-4) at Centennial (0-4) - This could be a competitive game since both teams are not that good and they are rivals. Mt Hebron scored their first 2 TDs last week in a losing cause, so they have issues scoring.  However, Centennial is seeking their 1st points of the year.  I believe Centennial will finally score, but not enough to win this game, even though this is a home game.  It should be a little close.  Mt Hebron by 2 scores.

Marriotts Ridge (3-1) at Oakland Mills (2-2) - A difficult game to pick.  Marriotts Ridge is coming off their first loss of the season, a close lost at that on the road to Howard (25-20). However, their first 3 wins were against the county worst teams. Although Oakland Mills has put up some points, 87 of their 111 points has come up against Hammond and Mt Hebron.  This time I am going with Marriotts Ridge and Coach Lewis, who will probably have his defense ready to slow down Oakland MIlls. Marriotts Ridge by 2 scores

Long Reach (3-1) at Wilde Lake (3-1) - Another difficult game to pick.  Long Reach rebounded from a 21-12 loss to River Hill by pounding Centennial 60-0.  Not sure if that help this very young team to get ready for Wilde Lake, who lost their 1st game last week to River Hill (23-15) in another close game.  Long Reach top player maker is So ATH Chris Martin Jr, while Wilde Lake offense goes as Sr ATH Osita Smith goes. Whoever gets their top playmaker the most touch should win this game.  This time I think the home team will do just that. Wilde Lake by 1 score.

River Hill (3-1) at Howard (3-1) - Yes, another difficult game to pick. River Hill knocked off its 2nd consecutive team from the undefeated ranks by defeated Wilde Lake.  This year they have the speed at the skill positions to effectively run Coach Van Duesen's modified Wing T offense. Howard comes into this game after also knocking off  a team from the undefeated ranks in a gritty Marriotts Ridge. Howard's defense, usually a big strength of the team, is still trying to jell under new d-coord and former Mt Hebron head coach Phil Zacharias. This is Howard's homecoming, plus a possibly Sr RB Devin Dawkins seeking redemption from a poor showing the last time he played against them.  I will lean to Howard, but it will be very close.  Howard by 1 score.

Week 6

Mt Hebron @ Wilde Lake-  Hebron won their 1st game and Wide Lake let a big win slip away from their fingers. Congrats to Hebron for winning their rivalry game against Centennial last week. Winning is always a great feeling for the players and coaches, makes the next weeks practice more lively. Wilde Lake needs to get Osita Smith more involved in the game plan. He Maybe the best player in the county. 20 plus touches at least should be the goal of the Wilde Lake staff. I think thats a big reason they lost to Long Reach last week. I think, at least early until this game is a blow out, Wilde Lake will force feed Mr. Smith. Wilde Lake 42 Mt Hebron 0

Centennial @ River Hill- Last week was Centennials last chance to win a game and put up some points. They feel 42-0. Glad they are still playing, rumors were after the Hebron game the team would fold, so the fact they are sticking it out is a testament to Coach Martin and the boys. River Hill didn't have the horses to hang with Howard. Even with Dawkins out most of the game, and the offensive line being beat up, RH never really stood a chance. This is RH's homecoming and BVD is not one to hold back so I expect this to be ugly. River Hill 53 Centennial 0

Oakland Mills @ Reservoir- This is a very interesting game. Oakland Mills crushed Marriotts Ridge last week in a kind of surprising game. The Oakland Mills passing game is on point. Kai Castle is leading the county in most Passing statistics. He is making a strong case to be 1st team all county. Reservoir had their big win against RH and they have not really be able to capitalize on the momentum. I think Reservoir is who we thought they were, and average team. I would love to see Rezzi expand their offense and utilize some of the athletes on the team. I think OM keeps the mojo going Oakland Mills 28 Reservoir 14

Glenelg @ Marriotts Ridge- Glenelg is a runaway train right now. Hard to see anybody slowing them down. Assuming health Glenelg is my favorite to win the 2A state title. Marriotts Ridge has some good players, and is well coached, but they are missing that depth that every team needs. Numbers are low and its at the point of year that every team is dealing with a few nicks and pains. I fear they are wearing down, they should have put up more of a fight against OM last week. Glenelg 42 Marriotts Ridge 7

Atholton @ Hammond- In 2012 this was a great game. In 2018 it is not. Hammond is pretty low, Especially on Def. Only Centennial is yielding more points per game than Hammond. Hammond has solid athletes, they should be better. Atholton goes as Melvin Brown goes. He is the heart and soul of the team. Best Offensive and Defensive player on the team. He should have another good game today. Atholton 35 Hammond 7

Howard @ Long Reach- This is Easily the game of the week. #2 v #3. The Battle of Elkridge. Not a lot needs to be said to hype this game up. Both teams are good and both teams want to beat each other more than any other opponent on the schedule.  This is a true Rivalry. Long Reach has bounced back nicely after falling to River Hill. Beating a talented Wilde Lake team is no easy task. Long Reach's offense is very balanced and Howard will have their hands full slowing them down. Howard will have to go into Long Reach and win without the best player Devin Dawkins. 10th grader Alex Rebeza has handled the load nicely, and it also makes things easier with Jerry O'Neill slinging the rock around to his quality receivers. Coach Willis has never beaten Howard since taking over the program. I think that changes tonight. Long Reach 21 Howard 20

My apologies for my brief analysis:

Week 6

Mt Hebron at Wilde Lake - Pretty sure Mt Hebron won't be able to score anywhere near the 47 points they scored last week against Centennial. Look for WVa commit Osita Smith to have a huge game to get Wilde Lake back in the winning column. Wilde Lake by 5 scores.

Centennial @ River Hill -  Centennial has not scored all year.  Unfortunately this will continue. River Hill will roll very big.  River Hill by 8 scores.

Oakland Mills @ Reservoir- A hard one to pick, especially since County Sports Zone says Reservoir is home, but MaxPreps says Oakland Mills is home. Either way, giving advantage to Oakland Mills due to their ability to score. Oakland Mills by 2 scores

Glenelg @ Marriotts Ridge - In recent matchups Marriotts Ridge has played Glenelg very close.  This year Glenelg is on a mission, and will win this one rather comfortably.  Glenelg by 5 scores

Atholton @ Hammond - Although Atholton usually have their offensive woes, Hammond scoring issues is NOT better.  Atholton will win ease. Atholton by 4 scores.

Howard @ Long Reach - Crosstown rivalry game. Should be another close game.  But I look at Long Reach's 2 score lost at home to River Hill while Howard dominated their game against the Hawks while playing most of that contest without Devin Dawkins, who is out this game. I still like Howard chances, but in a close one.  Howard by one score.
