We don't need him, we just won the SC.  Our top 4 dman are locked up for multiple years.  We are also in decent cap shape right now which is good because next summer Burakovsky and Vrana will be up for raises/extensions.

Like Duff said, they are in good shape on D. They'll sign a veteran depth Dman to be a scratch/share time with the young pups Bowey and co. and let them develop. Save their cap room for upcoming RFA signings.

 

They are going to be faced with a tricky situation with Ovi before you know it. Last couple years of his deal. Getting up there in miles. Do you come up with a new deal and keep him with the franchise his whole career? Do you let him walk and use that money to sign another upcoming young player hitting FA the first time (like Tavarez this year). Backstrom hits FA a year later I think, and then similar situation, is he still that elite player you pay those high rates for or do you re-allocate that money too? Gotta play the long game.

That’s awesome. I think he single handed my won game 7 of the Lightning series. They tried to fight him early in that game, he beat the hell of of the guy and took all the air and momentum out of TB. They did nothing of note for the rest of the game.

It looks like the Caps are bringing the same team back, minus Beagle, Grubauer, and Trotz. That’s a good thing. New coach will be an x-factor for sure. But the team is shaping up well.

I wonder about that, but I'm not worried about it. He's earned it. I mean, yeah, I hope he's ready to go, but how can I blame him after all the shit he went through to finally get there?

Totally agree. I have zero moral judgment of the dude if he shows up out of shape. Not many athletes in history have given as much to a single franchise as Ovie. I AM worried about the impact on the team having payroll tied up in one of the most expensive players in hockey not producing.

Yeah, I get it. I mean it would suck, but i'm bracing for a slow start, maybe for a couple full months. That worked out well this year, and there wasn't nearly as good a reason for the slow start as the reason for next season's slow start.
