Jeremy - you ask what's different now that they won the Cup?

For one, well... they won the Cup.

That's enough for me.

And the whole "he quit" thing just turns a blind eye to the fact that that isn't how championship winning coaches are treated. You and I both know that, so why do you keep going with the black and white, technically correct, he quit?

So, just to be clear. You have never and will never bash a player for sitting out because they want more money, despite already having a contract? Also, you don’t blame college coaches leaving during their contracts for the BBD?

Do I have that right?

Gotta love Florida firing Gallant mid-season, then him taking an expansion team to the SCF the next year.

I'm not sure I'd say coaches are any more dime-a-dozen in the NHL than in other leagues though. Just maybe that in a league as volatile as the NHL, a lot more teams think they are closer than they really are.

Also not surprised to see the two leagues with the most playoff spots to lead the way there.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. My friend that I get my really good NHL scoop from thinks there's a REALLY good shot Trotz takes the job in Seattle. With the way the expansion draft works now, that's not necessarily a non-competing job on day one, and he's got experience with expansion teams (NSH), it would give him a chance to take some time off, he'll get PAID, and then get to see if he can recreate Vegas' run.

I think the number of playoff teams plays in, also keep in mind that list is just mid season firings, you don't see many of those in the NFL, but you see a LOT of black monday firings every year. I wonder if that would put them up in the running or not? Maybe MLB is different because there are SO many games? I'm not sure...was an interesting thought though. Maybe the amount of parity in a league is what determines that, you touched on that though.

Here's a pretty good 30 min pod that gives a pretty fair analysis of the Trotz resignation.

They also briefly talk about the chances we see Carlson back.

This has nothing to do with this situation, I specifically am talking about how coaches get treated when they win a Championship.

It absolutely has everything to do with it.  If you are with what he did, you should be ok with the scenarios I said above.

You are saying that its fine for a coach to quit on his team, despite signing a contract (one which he obviously agreed to) that had the stipulations this one did.  He knew the potential ramifications if they won the cup.  And, from what I have heard, its not like the Caps  refused more money.  They didn't want to commit 5 years to him.  Did he ask them to rip up the option years and pay him an extra 1-2 million for those 2 years?  You don't know that the Caps wouldn't have done that.  You just know that they weren't willing to give him 5 more years.  I don't see how you can bash them for that.

It's far more nuanced than that. It's not remotely hard to see why me and many Caps fans aren't happy about this.

And no, I don't always mind when players/coaches, whoever, draws a line and renegotiates. Sometimes I do, but the devil is in the details.

Rob, you happen to be a fan of someone who has an interesting view on contracts though.

Who said I was a fan of his? And wtf difference does that make anyway? What’s the point of bringing this up?

I’m just pointing out that if you don’t like it when players sit out or coaches leave for the BBD, that you are being hypocritical of the Caps here.

You are willing to hand him anything because he won. I don’t see how you don’t see an issue with that.

Well I'm not being hypocritical at all. But thanks for the thought. Swing and a miss.

You are IF you have a problem with players holding out or coaches leaving.

You have yet to answer that part of it.

If you don’t have a problem with guys doing that, then you aren’t being a hypocrite at all.

Caps open vs. Boston. Game 2 the next day @ Pittsburgh (their first game).

Neat.

Thoughts about the draft? It’s going to be weird picking dead last. Good, but weird. :-D

Cap is set to go up about 4 million, this would be a big help in affording to resign Carlson.

Trotz to Islanders.

Damn. That's cold.

I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

5 years $20m. Double what he was set to get, not outrageous. Still feel how I feel though, you didn't want to honor the contract you signed. Don't feel bad. He did ask the Caps if there was anything could do money wise, and didn't like how high their answer was. Completely aware that they weren't going to go much higher because they lose Reirden if they do and didn't want to do that. They chose between the two, and I understand those who feel like that was disrespectful, or not giving him just winning the cup enough value, but to me, for the future, Ovi said it well last night. He will miss Trotz, he likes him a lot, but it's a business, and if it ends up being Reirden, a lot of guys will be happy, he's a good communicator, a good specialist, and is REALLY respected by the team.

Sure this could blow up in their face. And if they don't promote Reirden I'll be mad right there with everyone else, but I hate it when players hold out and try to renegotiate, and I'm not going to feel different when a coach does it. I still like the guy, and I wish him well...ish. Seriously rooting for Tavarez to the Sharks now ;)

The Caps have acquired the 2nd round pick (#47) of the Colorado Avalanche for Brooks Orpik and Phillip Grubauer.

Hopefully, that means they just made cap space to sign Carlson.

Getting Orpik off the books is huge. That was not a great contract.

Anyone else watching tonight? I like the fact that most, if not all, the teams will congratulate the Caps on their Stanley Cup win. Teehee.
