The Caps have acquired the 2nd round pick (#47) of the Colorado Avalanche for Brooks Orpik and Phillip Grubauer.

Hopefully, that means they just made cap space to sign Carlson.

Sign Carlson and give him that "A" that Orpik vacates.

Defenseman Alexander Alexeyev is the Caps pick at #31. Big Russian.

Apparently he is a nice two-way player, but isn't physical and will need development. This is where having Reirden in stow does make me more comfortable. Seems like a really nice investment given the young forwards already here. I like it.

Getting Orpik off the books is huge. That was not a great contract.

Yeah that was a great move. Grubs for a 2nd was pretty good by itself, that's about what he should have got you, but to clear Orpik a year early too!! That was a nice bonus. Carlson should be signed today, they were almost there before the draft. Now you've got room for Wilson and Kempny too. Just cleared room for Bowey to play next year too. Pretty much all around nice move.

What about DSP?

What about DSP?

Reminds me of Joel Ward, and not in the because of what they look like way. Almost non existent in the regular season, then all over the place in the playoffs, turns that into $3-4m per year on a new deal. You know how much I HATED the Ward contract, and I can't bring myself to do that again. That's what started us down this cap mess, you can't go giving 3rd-4th line players $4m contracts.

Same vein I've got a hard limit on how much I'd pay Beags. Yeah I know, faceoffs...but we've had that before with players and you gotta let them go. Someone else will step up and fill that slot. It's like giving all your bullpen guys giant contracts, you just can't do it or it squeezes your actual talent core.

Everyone I talk to has been so sentimental about it, oh but we just won the cup...yeah I understand that, but I'd like to win another one, and you aren't going to if you have to start making salary dumps every year as contracts expire. Just the accountant in me...have to be pragmatic.

Well at that price, no way.

The Pens are good at this. Letting guys like MAF, Kunitz, Niskanen, Orpik, many more go instead of being sentimental.

Yep, good point. After they got Malkin and Sidney locked up, they were like us in the sense they had 2 big stars on 2 big deals, and that leaves a lot less room for the extra pieces. They keep finding good value to put with them, but lets face it, without that hot shot rookie scorer of theirs, they don't make the playoffs this year, they got lucky on that one. Now they can't afford to resign Kessel which makes them even thinner. Somehow they keep finding a way to compete with add ons though, we just have to keep enough of our core together first, and then figure out how to add some depth in cheaply. Stephenson saved our bacon this season stepping up out of the blue.

I heard there's a chance they might re-sign Orpik to a cheap deal now to make sure they are deep, but I worry if that cuts into Bowey's development. He's ready to be up full time now, not much else he can learn in the minors. You got Carlson, Orlov, Kempny and Niskanen, and then Djoos. If you put Orpik back in the mix and Bowey, who is sitting? I love the depth especially on a value deal, but I also know we need to get Bowey up to speed, he's going to be huge going forward. Then there's the backup goalie...could be Copely. I don't think Vitacek is ready yet, he needs a year playing in Hershey.

We re-signed Carlson!

Sounds like it’s 8/60. W00T!

DSP re-signed was denied a QO, kinda how I hinted last week.

Then promptly resigned for 1 year and $1m. Had better offers from 3 other teams, 1 1 year and 2 2year, and took less to stay, said he really liked DC and knew they had cap issues, but was worth it to take less money to stay here.

Wilson will get a deal done. Zero doubt there.

Kempny I'm surprised isn't done yet, he's been seriously in demand though, so as much as he loves Reirden, my suspicion is he's not signing anything til the Caps make it official with him this week.

Beags could be another interesting sitch. Could see him sign a short, cheap deal like DSP to be a good fit on that 4th line, BUT I could easily see a team overpay and give him 3 years and $3-4m per, can't blame him if he gets that, but we've got guys like Travis Boyd that can fill that spot pretty easily.

Beags probably SHOULD take the kind of deal the market will give him.

Yeah I won't fault him in the slightest. Those 4th line specialist type guys usually get ONE shot at those deals, things just break at the right time, they should capitalize. One normal year and they'll be back to minimum contracts.

That's the importance of developing depth in the minors, at C, you've got Liam O'Brien who is a grinding kind of C, Travis Boyd will probably get the first crack. Bau is like 6 and a half feet tall, but a winger, Riley Barber is like a young Oshie, RW, bit of a scoring touch, plays two ways. Jonas, Bowey, and Johansen are all D prospects (and good ones), so if Stephenson is going to stick on one of the higher lines, then Boyd is probably the guy.

Kempny is official. 4 years 10 million dollars. This is a great deal for a guy who logged a lot of minutes for the team and solidified the blue line. Glad to see this one get done!

So is Reirden. I knew Kempny wouldn't sign til they gave him the job, he was pretty much following Todd wherever he went, really saved his career. Went from being a healthy scratch to a top 4 on a Stanley Cup team. $2.5 isn't a big hit for us, and it keeps our entire top 4 together for the next 3 years. That's a REAL solid way to stay in contention. Now it's up to Todd to run with it...or not. Very interested to see who his staff is going to be...though there was an outside shot that Jeff Halpern may get a spot, he's been an assistant with TB lately, but I think he just got a new job somewhere.

Wilson is next up, should end up being somewhere around $4m give or take 500k. I dunno how long he will sign for, maybe just through RFA years, but we'll see.

They've got just under $10m left in cap space after these signings, I can't remember exactly how many more spots they have to fill out on the roster, but they should be in good shape. They will save some space cause Bura and Vrana are RFA next year, so they'll want to earmark some money to extend them too. I think BMGM has done a pretty good job of getting a handle on a rough cap issue and keeping the core together, aside from that one poor dump last year (MJ90, and not against the trade, just felt like we could have gotten a better deal, or dealt him to Vegas and kept Schmidt).

I'm glad we kept some of these guys that did so much for us around.  Honestly I'm fine if they don't win next year, I'm ecstatic that they finally got one, but it'll be fun to have a shot to repeat.

So I was close on Beags. 3 years $2.5m per. Almost same thing we gave Kempny. Good for top 4 D, not great for 4C. I’m happy for him but i understand going in house on this one. Saves like $2m on payroll.

Bidding war jacked it up, ended up getting 4 years and $12m. Can't pay $3m a year for your 4C.

Unfortunately for Trotz, Tavares just signed a 7-year contract with TOR.

Supposedly, Tavares asked the ISL not to trade him at the deadline, so they’re a little sore about the situation.
