True story. Neck spasms doesn't sound good though. Hopefully just slept on it wrong.

This isn't a team that should be giving up high-level, advanced talent for rental help. But two decent prospects years away for a Hall of Famer with gas in his tank, absolutely.

I noticed many Phillies fans at the time of the trade, thought they didn't get enough for the "future HOFer." Obvious with Thome's injury, this trade isn't looking so bad. I do think there's a good chance this trade will end up being a complete wash though.

8/20 Baltimore Sun / Dan Connolly:

"Jim Thome (neck) will begin his rehab in Sarasota, Florida on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Thome said earlier this month that he wouldn't be able to do any baseball activities for 30 days, but he has evidently made solid progress after receiving an epidural injection for a herniated disk in his neck. The future Hall of Famer is still hopeful of rejoining the O's in September."

Thome would add a nice PH option off the bench in September. I wouldn't give him very many starts, but I can definitely see him PH late in games, drawing a nice walk, then leaving for Avery as a pinch runner.

40-man rosters are awesome. I wish I could have seen Earl work with a huge roster of players at his disposal. His ability to use players skills while hiding deficiencies was legendary.

Actually kind of forgot about Thome.

If he can return, he'll be a solid bat to have in September. I'm not really sure how the at bats would shake out, though. It seems McLouth is going to stay out in LF and Manny has 3rd locked down. I suppose you could have Davis get some starts at 1B and sit Reynolds?

I'm afraid that Buck is going to insert him back in the lineup in the cleanup role because of the "respect" factor. As long as were winning, I don't want to mess with a good thing. Wouldn't mind him so much lower in the lineup but I don't know if starting him everyday in the clean up role is the best thing going forward.

As has been mentioned, he'd be a great bat off the bench.

He is fine as the #3 hitter since Buck isn't putting Wieters there.

McLouth should be batting second.

Will be a nice PH option and Davis cold streak insurance. Obviously right now you have to keep Davis at DH and playing him regularly vs RHP.

MASN / Kubatko: "Jim Thome (neck) took 40 dry swings Friday.
Good news. We heard on Thursday that Thome was being "slowed down" by doctors, but Orioles manager Buck Showalter believes that the veteran slugger should be back later this month."

If he were to comeback at this point, is it safe to assume, he gets the clean-up spot back?

I doubt we'd see him starting very often, but he could be a real nice bat off the bench late in games.

I definitely can see him pinch hit late in a game, drawing a walk, then Avery comes in to pinch run.
