Will be interesting to see if he chooses to play in the D-League over switching to baseball full-time.
With the Blazers potentially being gutted by free agency and looking at a rebuild, he could possibly make their roster.

Oregon Live: Connaughton signs
Rookie Pat Connaughton, whose rights the Blazers acquired from Brooklyn as part of a draft-day trade that also brought big man Mason Plumlee to Portland, has signed a contract with the Blazers. Terms were not disclosed.
The 6-foot-5 guard brings Portland's roster to 12 players under contract, one under the league minimum.

They like him but I still don't think it is a guaranteed contract. They will let him go to summer league and if they decline to give a guaranteed he will most likely go back to pitching if not we go after the 425k and lose his rights.

They have 12 on their roster right now, including Connaughton, and that's still 1 under the league minimum with no free agents left worth signing. Unless they are completely surprised by a multiple guys they picked up for their summer league roster, I think he sticks. Blazer management won't admit it, but they're tanking to rebuild....I'm pretty confident Connaughton will be on the team this season, provided he is committed to basketball.

24x7Sports, referencing a text message from Connaughton, says his Blazers deal is 3 years with the first 2 guaranteed. Barring a change of heart, it'll probably be 2017 at the earliest before he'd begin a baseball career.

I think only first rounders are guaranteed to received a guaranteed contract.
Second rounder can probably get one if the team chooses to issue one to them.
Correct. You'll see teams do that with 2nd Rd players if they think he has a decent chance of being a contributor someday. It's low-risk because the guaranteed money is usually under $1 mil/yr (although that will probably change some with the upcoming revenue bump, but it'll still be relative). And if the guy doesn't work out, you simply elect not to pick up the option in the 3rd year....but if he does become a valuable player, by offering him a 1st Rd type of deal you get 5 years of team control, whereas under a non-guaranteed contract as a rookie the player can become a free agent sooner.

Give us back our bonus you son of a bitch.

Sounds to me like he's been upfront with the Orioles from the beginning about his basketball intentions. I don't see any reason for surprise or anger over him taking this opportunity.

But dammit that don't mean we won't find some anyway

Well... provided that Connaughton is good enough to play basketball. But that's still a big question mark.

I'm fairly certain the context of Olshey's statement applies only to the 2 seasons on Connaughton's contract that are guaranteed, at least for now. He'll get every opportunity to earn playing time this season with Portland's roster being blown to smithereens, especially if his shooting from college translates over. Like I mentioned above, I think the soonest we see him playing in the O's system is 2017.

Appeared in his first NBA game tonight, garbage time in the Blazers' loss at Phoenix. 5 pts in 3 minutes.

Baltimore Sun: NBA's Pat Connaughton, an Orioles draft pick, believes he will eventually return to baseball

Every time I've heard Connaughton talk on this subject, I've thought that he's made really strong points and is making decisions exactly like I would in his shoes (neglecting my lifelong love of baseball and the Orioles which would undoubtedly cause me to choose pitching in the O's system over anything else).
