Not to mention it was like a week after throwing Ovi under the bus, and I feel like there were a couple more early in the year. Players don't trust him at all.
Erat, Orlov, Holtby... the list goes on and on.

Baltimore Sports Report: Should The Capitals Trade Mike Green?

Leaning towards no because our depth on defense is horrible enough as is, without Green, this year would seem like a good year.

Washington Capitals Off-Season Priorities- Stars And Sticks (Yup, I'm writing there too now!)
http://starsandstick...son-priorities/
The Washington Capitals have a very important off-season coming up. They have the chance to either come back strong in 2014-2015 or to squander opportunities and continue to regress. If they want to contend in 2014-2015 and beyond, here is what they must do this off-season.

Step 1: Hire GM
Step 2: Hire head coach.
Step 3: Worry about personnel decisions
Step 4: Plan Stanley Cup Parade!

Out of curiosity...why? I don't much about his track record running a franchise.

He did a terrible job running Phoenix. I just don't think he's got the front office chops. Not all players are cut out for player evaluation, contract negotiations etc. No matter how good he was as a player, he just isn't as good of a GM.

Ws he the GM there? Just a bad job of assembling talent?

I think "president" or something, but basically the GM.
Poor job evaluating coaches, he only wanted to bring in guys he played with/against, poor job evaluating talent, they gave out a couple bad deals, and drafts were below average.
He brings name value, but so did Jordan, and he was god-awful as a talent evaluator. I think elite players tend to be worse at evaluating other talent because they spend so long knowing they are better than everyone else and lose the ability to see the good undeveloped stuff in players later.
Hard to explain, but how many truly great, elite players do you see becoming coaches or GMs in any sport?

GMGM is still around. Also, every NHL team has assistant GMs.

Found out he's actually left the team, even though he's under contract through June. The AGM is running the show in the interim...pretty sure his name is Billy.

Well, he was dealing with a horrible situation in Phoenix. Think he deserves a shot with an owner who gives a crap. If he's hired as something close to the team VP, I'd be fine with that.

Hard to ween out the stuff to blame a FO guy for and the stuff to give him a pass on, especially in a situation like PHX (it sucks), but there were some big misses that were squarely on Gretzky, especially with his talent assessment. Just some bad drafts, FA moves and trades. I just don't think he has "it" from that particular perspective. Might be a better coach than a GM, but most of the elite guys want to jump straight to the front office, so they don't have to do the grind.

Orioles still made acquisitions between MacPhail and Duquette. For example, Darren O'Day was signed during that period. Like Dave and Jeremy mentioned, every team has Asst GMs with a functioning front office.
