GW Fins - been a while since I went (2007) but it's always ranked among the best restaurants in the city.

Definitely hit up Dat Dog. There's one on Frenchmen Street in Marigny, not far from FQ.

Shit, I went somewhere really nice in 2014 with my wife, pretty fancy, but I can't remember the name.

I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

Fins has a dress code of a collar shirt, FYI.  Its pretty good but you can find better for the price.

OK, so I found the place I was talking about. It's expensive....dress nicely...good place to impress a lady.

If it's not your kind of place, no big deal. Here are some places I marked down when I was there for MNF in 2014. Didn't hit them all but next time I go, I will be spending  much less time on Bourbon Street and hitting up the places in other neighborhoods.

Jacques-Imo's for authentic slightly upscale cajun

Cochon Butcher for sandwiches and cocktails

Vaughan's Lounge for live jazz

Ruby Slipper Cafe for good brunch

Snake and Jake's Christmas Club Lounge for Christmas themed dive bar

I've been to Cochon Butcher and Snake and Jake's, and Jacques-Imo's and Vaughan's are on my list for this visit, but we're going with another couple so I don't have quite the say I normally do on vacation plans.

FWIW, I'm still a Brigtsen's believer.... it's been a few years, but my bride have been to virtually every well-respected restaurant in NOLA and we never found any place that dethroned Brigtsen's.   Ask if Sandy is still there, if she is, ask for her to be your waitress and just ask her to take care of you.   (She'll choose the wine that's best for both the food and the budget.)  (Tell her the too-tall guy from the B&B in Gulf Shores sent you...)

It's in an old house, just a block's stroll from where the St Charles streetcar takes a right onto Carrollton....

ps:  The gumbo is excellent... dark and scary

Brigtsens is really good, but Dante’s across the street is better. The problem with NOLA is there are an infinite number of great places to eat.

We have different opinions about how to rank those two... different strokes, etc... perhaps the greatest thing about New Orleans is that a less-than-good restaurant just cannot survive....

Looks like I'm headed down there next month for a bachelor party.

Pray for me.

Can you bring beer on the swap tours?  Or are they afraid some drunkard will fall in and get eaten by a gator?

Bachelor party? Don't lie. You're going to Wrestlemania.

I may roll the dice and do Hotel Tonight.  Seems like a decent app and McNulty recommends it

However, I do have a lot of trepidation about going on a flight without having a place to stay in advance.

Was going to do this for NYC with the Big East Tournament next month but then I chickened out. I get way too stressed without finite travel plans/reservations.

I've never done it in a real city, but in both Dewey and Ocean City I've gone down without arrangements and then in the wee hours negotiated with a desk clerk to let me have a room for a deeply discounted rate.  This was years ago, but I found that places that seem like small, local owned things will take fraction of the standard rate rather than let a room go unused.  More corporate, chain-y places wouldn't go for it.  I paid in cash, so I'd guess that the desk was just pocketing it, but was good enough for me.

Sounds like you went to the No Tell Motel, with hourly rates.
