At least Birdland won't have to waste electrons discussing all of the great Orioles International signings today.

Vlad Jr to TOR for 3.9M as one of the top couple IFAs. Crazy the Orioles weren't involved.
DD apparently involved for the Blue Jays.
No sense signing the guy for the Orioles and then having to play against him.

Steve Melewski– @masnSteve
Some of the fine folks at Ripken Stadium tonight passed on that Cuban RHP Lazaro Leyva hit 97 on gun there tonight with nifty curve at 77.

That is cool.

Note: The Orioles weren't inactive yesterday during the first day of international signings. Names should begin to surface later this afternoon.
I've heard that the roll call should include 10 players

I know this is Roch's comment, not yours, but my general response (not to you) is "where have the Orioles shown they have a deeper understanding of the international talent pool than other teams"
I mentioned in my post on Vlad Jr last September....go after some of his friends. Vlad Jr's (#1 BA) cousin SS Gregory Guerrero was the #6 (BA) prospect and signed by the Mets for 1.5M and is also trained by Wilton Guerrrro. Drop the 7.5M.
Go see one guy, skip the expenses in the rest of the class.
We've released more money so far this season than it would have taken to sign Guerrero x 2.
If the International market is all about relationships....how in the world can the Orioles not have the best relationships to sign those guys.
Blah.

Last week, the Orioles signed Cuban first baseman Yaisel Mederos, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound right-handed hitter. He's viewed as being a plus-hitter with plus-power. The Orioles list him as being 25 years old.

The 25-year-old Mederos hit .268/.343/.402 in parts of four seasons in Cuba’s Serie Nacional. He only hit 12 home runs in 531 plate appearances, although Kubatko notes that Mederos has power potential.
That ain't plus power. I'm sure you're stunned to learn that.

Is Cuban baseball analogous to any of our MIL levels? Or is it too much of a mixed bag (containing guys at different levels) to say that?

I've heard that it's between AA/AAA. But what does hitting for a .780 OPS mean even in AA? It's a very rough estimator.

I've heard that large swaths of the league would be High A.

So, maybe it's a mixed bag of guys from A thru AAA... would would make judging anything based on that about impossible based on numbers... you'd not only need scouts, you'd also need those scouts to who know who's who..

Maybe I'm remembering wrong and mixing up Cuba and Japan?

Yup.
I meant, I'm sure you're stunned to learn that the player we signed was claimed to have great power but in fact has limited.
