Waiver period lasts two days. Usually guys are DFA and then waived, but not always. Can do it backwards and he's eligible to play while on waivers.
How can you be placed on waivers and still play? Will it be effective after the game?

Waivers are not a new thing. In the past it was a way to make trades after the deadline had passed.
It is nice to see the Yankees be the ones trying to dump players because they are so far out of it.

Cole also has 5 more years at $36 million as well as Rodon with a massive 5 years left.

King and Brito are good arms. Thorpe looks like a top pitching prospect. I don't know anything about the other pitchers they gave up, but their numbers weren't terrible.
Soto feels like a move that could blow up, and he's only signed for this year. Money obviously isn't a problem in NY, but a ton is already owed to Judge, Cole, Rodon, and Stanton.

He's been hoping to change the narrative for about 5 years now.
Was still good in '21, livable (not good) in '22... '23 was horrific.
Other thing that stands out is his inability to stay in the lineup.
Hopefully he starts cold, and doesn't build any confidence.

He's a worse fielding Chris Davis at this point.

This laughably undersells how bad Chris Davis' final seasons were.
Stanton had a 695 OPS in 2023. 759 in 2022 (made the All-Star team). 870 in 2021.
Chris Davis had a 539 OPS in 2018, 605 in 2019, and 337 in a brief appearance in 2020.

Yeah, Davis's last 3 years or 250 games played has to be one of the worst 250 game runs in MLB history. From any angle you want to look at it. -5.3 rWAR over those 250 games. An OPS+ around 50. I find it hard to believe someone else got 250 games to be that bad. This laughably undersells how bad Chris Davis' final seasons were.

Ok, not quite as bad as the worst of the Crusher but trending there. Sub-200 average, sub-300 on base and 124 strikeouts in 101 games. A two outcome hitter, out or home run. And his fielding is atrocious.

You're still vastly underselling how bad Davis became. Stanton was bad last year, but he's still a mile better than Davis over the final years. 87 OPS+ for Stanton in 2003. Davis had a 49 OPS+ from 2018-2020. There is an equal gap between a 125 OPS+ hitter (like Gunnar Henderson was in 2023) and Stanton as there is between Stanton and end-of-career Davis.
I'm not defending Stanton, btw (though saying "2 outcome" is obviously untrue, he still had a 10% walk rate...he was a 3 outcome guy). Just highlighting how deeply Davis sank to over his final seasons. It's really quite remarkable, and nothing I can think of really compares.

Davis didn't really fall off a cliff until 2018. Stanton's 2022 and 2023 seasons are actually pretty comparable to Davis in 2016 and 2017.

Where they were both reduced to the role of guess hitter.
