The Yankees are very deep in the pen. They will be able to survive this.

HOWEVER, I think it ends their chances of a world series title.

The thing about Rivera is that he gave the team a certain mindset, especially in the playoffs.

He gave them the mindset of, we get a lead and we aren't losing. The team had that confidence. Its why he has been the MVP of that team over the last 15 years.

I think they are still a playoff team, could very well win the World Series. Does it lessen their chances for both, I think so. As you said they are very deep in the 'pen. I just wouldn't write anything off. We're in May!

I also think they make the playoffs but if Soriano gets hurt, they are in trouble.

Im not writing them off for the reg season...but I have no issue writing off their playoff chances.

Their starting pitching isn't that great although Pettitte COULD help.

But losing Rivera shifts everyone down a slot and now with Phelps in the rotation, their pen isn't as deep.

Do they put Hughes back there? Maybe they do and if they do that, their rotation is hurt. They have some good pitching prospects as well.

But no one they bring in will give them that sense of invincibility that Mo gave them and that is going to be very important once the playoffs start.

That contract is going to hurt, even for them. Even if it doesn't hinder their spending much, they won't be getting much production from 3B in the near future.

The best part, to me, is that they knew it was a bad contract when they signed it, but they were afraid to let him opt out and go to someone like the Red Sox.

First rule of thumb in any baseball contract negotiation: never negotiate for more than 5 years, even if it's Babe Ruth. If that means you miss out, so be it. There are just too many variables to have any idea what will be that far down the road.

I'd rather pay someone $25M per for 5 years than pay them $15M per for 10 years. Even if I end up paying more to keep the guy for another 5 years after that, it will have been worth it to me to have had my peace of mind knowing I was able to get out after only 5 years if anything had gone wrong.

Yankees up for sale?

http://msn.foxsports... ... 1af8405f16

Wonder how much the Yankees could net in a potential sale given how much the Dodgers went for? Whatever it is not bad for a team that went for only $10 million back in the early 70s and I believe G. Steinbrenner investment in it was some six figure amount.

I, for one, am glad that happened. I'd much rather it not help the Yankees, but I'm glad it happened. MLB now has egg on their face and something that this makes it as clear as day that a change in policy needs to happen.

There was a game a couple weeks ago (I don't remember who played, or if it was the CWS or majors) where the right fielder fell into the stands and came up with the ball, but the camera had a clear angle through an open railing that showed him fall on top of the ball and pick it up to claim the out.

This happens. It might get some more notice because it is the Yankees, but it happens.

The Yanks better be worried...

Pettite out 6 weeks with an ankle fracture. Sabathia sent to the DL with a groin injury.

The Yankees have acquired Ichiro Suzuki for RHPs DJ Mitchell and Danny Fahrquar, a source said. Yanks also get undisclosed cash in deal.

It's popping up all over... so odds are that it did happen.
