Extending everyone felt like a great move at the time but now they're locked in at a bunch of positions with limited resources and areas to improve. There must be a happy medium though if you're listening Orioles...
I think the problem is that Elias is happy being medium.
In this loose metaphor I'm saying that he's content to build merely a playoff team on paper (admittedly that's a little better than just "medium" so the not-very-clever wordplay falls apart a bit) and doesn't see the value in the higher marginal cost needed to push expectations above 90 or so.
