So, he's not Abreu. I think we knew that. He's looked good but he is getting on in age so he needs to make it happen soon. And it would be nice to see the walk rate increase but I won't hold my breath.

A lot of the critique is based on him not improving much because he's already 26... but does that hold water? Don't you have to adjust things based on the level of competition and whether he missed any time because of the Cuba thing? (Did he miss any time because of the Cuba thing?)

I'd point out his splits:
He's batting .290/.353/.419 against lefties and .224/.244/.329 against righties. He has no walks and just one strikeout in 31 PAs vs left handed pitching. His stats are inflated by 3 HBP but will show some improvement when his BABIP improves.
If you're one of those who thought that Alvarez was going to be a platoon bat against lefties at best then he's done ok and might just be a platoon option with Snider for next year (although he's been good against lefties in limited playing time - primarily despite being a left handed hitter).
